The major problem I feel as the seasons progress is you lose character interaction for the sake of character, and gain character interaction for the sake of advancing the plot.
But ASOIAF has no plot. It's just a history of Westeros. There is no Ring, no journey. The dialogue and characters are what keep the pages turning.
And the early seasons were ripe with it. Obviously you can't get it all in there, but it had some damn good scenes involving just people sitting and talking to each other.

You can make archetypes out of any character ever. The show does a poor job of characterization because it fails to rely on the dialogue present in the books, and instead focuses on the events.

Apart from the fact that up until Season 6, the battle episodes have generally been the best. Battle of the Bastards might be my favourite of S6, or the finale, but neither are amazing.
There needs to be a balance between dialogue in events. It can't all be plot. There needs to be some world building and colour as well as 'le shogging tweests'
