He felt powerless, first when he became an orphan and is forced into a home, and also undermined by Kaneda, perceiving his watch over him as stifling despite Kaneda being a total bro, and his attitude e.g. in Tetsuo's dream, the city buildings are enveloping him with he and everything crumbling around him as Kaneda just continues playing with a ball. He looks toward him for help but resents it and also wants to be like him. He even tries to steal Kaneda's bike later on. When he got a taste of power, it went to his head. It was fun watching his power trip as he starts to figure what he can do and begins to laugh manically after teleporting.
He was a hothead from the get go with something to prove, which is why he tried extra hard to get that guy in the beginning before his awakening.
