It's a Samourai movie that happens to be about boxing.
The American Fight Film is a variation of the film noir- it's not about the fight itself, it's about guy trying to remain honorable in an dishonorable time, to live by his code. The fight becomes a metaphor for moral struggle.
Fat City is a particularly stylized noirish version of that. I would've love to have seen Houston do Red Harvest.
Also Spartan, the Mamet film.
