People, let's not forget, this is the more realistic, more cynical end of the Superhero scale. THIS version of Superman doesn't have that stupid "turning back time" crap that previous versions had. He isn't some flawless being that saves everyone and instantly solves every problem. He isn't the man that sneezes and destroys a Solar System. This version of Superman is not a God or a walking Deus Ex Machina. This version of Superman is wracked with terrible anxiety and insecurity. He struggles to find his place in the world - to get people to accept him. He strives to do the right thing, no matter what, but sometimes even that isn't enough. People criticize him rather unjustly. They blatantly insult him without offering any regard to how much it hurts. They viciously attack him verbally, even though he's doing the very best he can with what he has. Ultimately, though, I believe this Superman isn't the finished product. He's still on his way to becoming the ideal hero we've adored since his creation. He just needs more time to prove himself. Show the critics and those that mercilessly assaulted him that he isn't wrong. Moreover, let's not forget that this whole film was about Superman and Batman butting heads at first, but then learning that the other one isn't the bad guy. That by working together, they can accomplish far more good than they could alone. This is what sets the stage for Justice League and the films beyond. If only, if only people would just give them a chance - and not be so quick to be so harsh.

The character doesn't have to be a campy caricature with a 60s radio announcer voice but he also doesn't have to be on the opposite side of the spectrum. We already have Batman being dark as fuck, couldn't Superman have brought at least some levity to the film? The guy is a literal fucking god and all he does is sulk like a big fat pussy

You're absolutely right! Why don't we wade through 3 shit movies of Superman being a sulking whiny faggot so that maybe we he stops being a faggot in the 4th or 5th movie we can finally understand and enjoy him more as a character!

Or better yet why not make him NOT A HUGE STEAMING PIECE OF SHIT FROM THE GODDAMN GET-GO SO WE MIGHT WANT TO WATCH THOSE NEXT FEW MOVIES!!!

It's a memorable scene too. His space daddy forbid him, but he listened to his Earth daddy in order to save the woman he loves.

Still love that scene to this day. Snyder Man has a bunch of world ending shit going on but that shit is nothing compared to the scale going on in Donner. That silence and then the screaming before storming off was top tier.

Making Superman a cynical objectivist narcissist doesn't make it good. It makes it bad.
>This version of Superman is not a God
Tell that to the retarded characters. Lex Luthor literally can't discern the difference.
>He struggles to find his place in the world
Pouts, whines, only saves his girlfriend in the entire movie.
>People criticize him rather unjustly.
He's a selfish destructive cunt that destroyed half a city then sabotaged and threatened the US military at the end of his origin story.

You watched it 12 times and yet you failed to understand it. Pic related.

Lex's plan revolves around proving that Superman ISN'T a god. Ironically, he succeeds but it backfires. Superman is given a man's burial and seen as a hero worth being inspired by, not a god to be adored.

That was the same Kryptonian dream tech that Zod used in MoS. It's a good idea to keep time travel as limited as you can if you're using it in your story. My bet is that it also takes a power source beyond the Flash's own to open the portal, however small that it is. If you really wanted to limit the accessibility of time travel, you'd use an ultra-rare fuel source for it, too.

That's where you lost me. There were neither of these things in this film. Batman starts off a broody, angry killer and ends a broody killer. Wonder Woman had no character, same with Amy Adams. Superman is broody and mopey and ends up dead, or comatose to be more accurate I guess. But I never really expect too much character developement from capefilms, so that's fine.

And the poor editing probably aided the film because it took away attention from the laughably stupid plot.

In theory if he flew fast enough, faster then lightspeed he'd go back in time. (I know he can't, because physics.) He drops a smile in the day of the dead scene and in the 'My World' scene, but it's not enough. Sure, he looks serious and angry in the recent comics too, but there are also lighter moments where he removes it. Cavill just can't.

It's just sort of a true statement that he is horrible actor. It's not on Snyder (completely), Cavill is horrible in just about everything he has been in. Snyder might not be good in directing his actors around the scene (not issue with Eisenberg or Affleck since they're good), but Cavill is completely terribad as actor.

I would like to like him as actor, so I could enjoy this film even more, but I can't.

In a lot of the scenes, especially the rescue montage, I think he's being asked to convey emotions that you're all coming close to naming but not quite getting:

When he first lands with the girl at the Day of the Dead festival, we see him briefly smile before the crowd starts reaching out to touch him like he's some sort of holy relic. The smile melts away to be replaced by an expression that's a mixture of frustration and confusion. Through the remainder of the montage, he's shown with a look of what could very well be preoccupation and continued frustration. It even concludes with him watching an interview with Senator Finch, and he's quite clearly still wrestling with some unstated quandary.

That's because what Lois said at the beginning is true of all mankind: "I don't know if it's possible for you to love me and be you." In one sense, that's her saying that even though he can conceivably always be there in a way that no other person ever could be, it's him essentially being a "helicopter boyfriend," but in a broader sense, it's this:

Clark's this sort of quiet, retiring guy and so is Superman, at least so far. In the aftermath of the bombing, you see him silently going about helping the police and EMTs. He can't do this. By remaining aloof and something of a cypher in the public eye, people are defining him in any way they want. He's not yet defined himself and adopted a public persona. His frustration, confusion, and preoccupation all arise from his fears that people, by virtue of seeing him as a god figure as opposed to an inspirational hero, are forcing him down a path not of his choosing and are only just too happy to follow him down it.

>The guy is a literal fucking god and all he does is sulk like a big fat pussy
He is no god, anon. Put yourself in his shoes one moment. He's supposed to be there for 7 billion people but he is buy one guy. Whenever he intervenes he has to chose to let somebody else somewhere die yet they expect him to save everyone. On top of that, governments be it his own or foreign don't like that something so powerful can exist beyond their control. And even if he can't save them all, he tries to inspire mankind to do better, to "join him in the sun", but in the next town over there's a guy dressed like a bat marking human traffickers with red iron, there's a whole underworld of petty crimes and atrocious acts. The guy has only been wearing that cape for 2 years. It's normal that people doubt him and that he doubts himself. He still has a lot of work to do.

Lol no I'm not 50 years old... but yeah I agree, I've never seen a film receive such a huge amount of vitriol and hatred before like this one. If people would watch this film with an open mind instead of some preconceived notions about how it's "supposed" to be, I think they'd enjoy it a lot more. But that's just my opinion.

That was Injustice. Took place in an alternate universe, where he becomes some sort of fascist dictator because Joker tricked him into killing Lois. You should play the game, it's great!

You know what's funny? I'm starting to think that a lot of the "public" lines we hear him say:

>"The Bat is dead. Bury it. Consider this mercy."

>"I'll take you in without breaking you."

are him trying and failing to find a public voice, sort of like he's mimicking his old comic book heroes. In effect, it's like he's trying to project a tough guy image because he thinks by being all "badass" like the Batman, he can convince people to stop looking at him like a religious figure.

Only game that I can be bothered to play is dota these days. Been that way for years. No other game gets me interested because the gameplay just aint as exciting.

>alt universe.
well, sort of everything is outside the 'main story'. nobody points 'alt universe' in the million different scrooge and donald duck stories but everybody is ready to point it out with cape stories, why is that?
>>
>>71813301
BVS was all about breaking the people's perceived notions of him as a religious figure, Jesus, God whatever.

Atlas image gets broken.

Superman monument is Superman logo only.

I'm sure there's TON more to it if I rewatch it.

DC comics is known for stories revolving around alternate universes and parallel realities? That to me seems like a defining trait. I don't know if you read any comics, but Crisis on Infinite Earths is a good example of what I'm talking about.
>>
>>71813479
I guess you have a point there that DC has an actual thematic and storyline that considers these stories, got me there.

That's not apparent in Scrooge or Donald Duck comics.

>Ultimately, though, I believe this Superman isn't the finished product.

If you actually look at it, Superman is slowly going through the Hero's Journey/Monomyth cycle throughout the movies. The first movie ends with him crossing the first threshold (with the supernatural aid being ghost Jor-El) and, being "in the whale" with the Zod fight (and being forced to kill him to get out) and finally meeting the goddess (Lois).

BvS starts his road of trials and really fleshes out the meeting the goddess part, shows how Lois and his mom can be used as temptation for him to stray, has literal atonement with the father scene, and ends with his "death."
Justice League, from all we have heard about it, will fulfill the final third of the Hero's Journey, with him coming back from his death.

Then why all the Jesus references? It has a very depressing medieval European Christendom vibe to it, like Snyder thought he was making Braveheart or something. It's just really bad.

He says at the outset, "He'll be a god to them." Jor sees him as the savior of mankind and a bridge between Krypton's past and Earth's future. Here is his digital "ghost" looking upon his son and his godlike abilities and finding himself incapable of seeing him as anything other than a god himself.

Christ imagery would be meaningless to a Kryptonian, but it represents plenty to the audience. The religious iconography in these films plays so many different roles.
