This is probably true.
I played Warcraft I & II (but not III), and also spent a few years on WoW. I never took any interest in the story or the 'deep' lore, I was only in it for the gameplay.
However, I think the fact of me being exposed to that universe made a difference to my appreciation of the film. I enjoyed it, most other people thought it was juvenile and tacky.

why did gul'dan need medivh to open the portal after he came over to azeroth's side, wouldn't he need a sorcerer on the draenor side of the portal instead?
I thought the whole point is that you need someone to invite people over from one world to another, which is cool and dramatic as a reveal and makes sense
simply needing two sorcerers instead of one is fucking retarded and removes the whole point of that plot point
at this point gul'dan could have been assisted by any other orc shaman or rogue human wizard, medivh's betrayal becomes somewhat pointless

A damn good fantasy action movie that is even better if you understand it's background and lore to some extent. The worst part is some shitty acting in the story bits and a predictable plot but looking beyond that it's good. The stupid orc human woman is the worst part of the movie by far.
