I appreciate that he was obsessed with controlling everything, but what exactly was the purpose of destroying middle-earth and turning it into a literal hellscape?

Was he actually content with ruling over a barren wasteland, or did he want to rebuild everything eventually?

Shit makes no sense
>>
>>71764180

Some men just want to see the world burn.

Or he was a tryhard cuckboi trying to impress Nelkor.
>>
>>71764180
The only barren wasteland was the volcanic plain around Mt Doom.

There were no plans to destroy Middle Earth.
>>
>>71764180
He was literally fighting to exist.

Sauron was a determined young man with big dreams, ambition and the skills to apply himself. If only the youth of today were as determined as the Dark Lord Sauron, we might just live in a better world if they were.

Melkor wants to control the land itself.

Sauron was a Maia, like Gandalf/Mithrandir. The Maia were basically half-gods made by the Valar, the gods of Arda. Sauron was "made" either by Melkor or one of the other Valar. And yeah, Melkor was a Valar. Sauron functioned as a lieutenant of his.

>Sauron was a Maia, like Gandalf/Mithrandir.
Yes
>The Maia were basically half-gods made by the Valar, the gods of Arda
No, creating life was exclusively Eru's territory
>Sauron was "made" either by Melkor or one of the other Valar.
No, see above. Also, Sauron was originally, Mairon, a Maia of Aulë, like Curumo AKA Saruman.
>And yeah, Melkor was a Valar.
Yes
>Sauron functioned as a lieutenant of his.
Yes
>>
>>71765236
>No, creating life was exclusively Eru's territory

ultimately everything in the universe originated from Eru, but on Arda the Valar had the power to spawn/create life. The dwarves, for example, were made by one of the Valar, I forget who.
>>
>>71765287
By Aulë, but they had no life of their own. He could only control them like puppets. Eru took pity on him and gave the dwarves life on the condition that they would only awaken to the world after the elves.
>>
>>71765287
Aule created the dwarves. Yavannah made the Ents, but they were allowed to exist because Eru Illuvitar let it be.
>>
>>71765161
God told him to hide his power level.
Not even joking.
>>
>>71764206
Didn't he want to enslave all humans/Elves/Hobbits/Dwarves and others?
>>
>>71765420
No. He just wanted them to bow to him. The black numenorians and people from the east lived fine.
>>
>>71765420
You could do that without destroying the world.
>>
>>71764180
the idea of eru when creating the world was for it to function by itself. he spawned maia to shape the world AND LEAVE. Melkor didnt like that he has to work and then have nothing from it so he rebelled and attempted to rule the world himself. All the other maia except sauron sided with eru and asshated melkor like twice or trice over ultimately sending him into space. sauron tried to continue melkors legacy but as we saw in the movie or read in the books he was also BTFO. Elves who learned magic aka. extension of erus power left to valinor and left midle-earth to humans. no magic, just people running shit and existing by themselves just like eru wanted it to be. over. and thats the story.

Mordor was a remnant of Melkor's destruction. It looked that way when Sauron first set up shop there. I guess he picked it for several reasons, first of all because it reminded him of his old master, 2nd, It also happened to be a natural barrier for any forces trying to invade. Thirdly, The volcanic soil mixed with the inland sea of Nurnen provided Sauron with relatively fertile fields to feed his armies.

So he chose Mordor because it reminded him of Melkor, it could not be breached by any way except by scaling the mountains or by going through the Towers of the Teeth (where he built The Black Gate), and because it was pretty damn fertile in some places.

Sauron by the 3rd age thought that since everyone of note had either been killed or left Middle-Earth by that point (IE, the Valar, Eru and the Maiar had abandoned it, and the elves were leaving for Valinor). By his logic, Might makes Right, and there was not a single more powerful being than Sauron in Middle-Earth at the time. As an angelic being, he obviously knows better than puny mortals right? That's what he thinks anyway.

>"When he found how greatly his knowledge was admired by all other rational creatures and how easy it was to influence them, his pride became boundless. By the end of the Second Age he assumed the position of Morgoth's representative. By the end of the Third Age (though actually much weaker than before) he claimed to be Morgoth returned"

Imagine that you travel back in time to the stone-age. The shit you know would make people treat you like a god. This is what happened to Sauron. He wanted to accomplish his designs quickly and loved the praise he got for his creations. This hunger for praise then turned into pride, and pride turned into him deluding himself into the idea that he was a god and deserved to be treated like one, and anyone who opposed him deserved everything they got, because Might makes Right.

Better question

If aragon utilized the power of the ring could he have topled sauron and taken power for himself

Iys clear of galadrial or gandalf used the ring they would have shit stomped him but what about a great human warrior like aragon?
>>
Could Tom Bombadil survive in Sauron's world if Sauron won?

Could Tom Bombadil kill Melbourne if it was at Tom's house and Tom's bitch was cheering him on?
>>
>>71769045
>It looked that way when Sauron first set up shop
Not quite as bad. Thangorodrim established that these enemy strongholds were surrounded by wastelands of slag produced by their forges and machines.
>>
>>71769112
>If aragon utilized the power of the ring could he have topled sauron and taken power for himself
Unequivocally yes. A person witha strong enough will can claim the ring for their own and it will stop trying to return to sauron, however it still corrupts deeds and actions of the wearer to warp what good they intend until they become another dark lord.

When aragorn looks in the palantir this was his plan. To show that aragorn had the reforged sword and the halfling he assumed was carrying the ring.

The battle of moranon at the black gates was sauron attempting to crush the only actual threat to his power. Only when it was too late did he realize the game they were playing.
>>
A common theme with Tolkien is evil starting with a noble goal and then degrading to just evil for the sake of it.

Sauron may have claimed to want to remake middle earth, but had he conquered it he likely would've just let it all die.
>>
>>71769416
I think it is more in line with his luddite philosophy. Power without wisdom always turns to evil.

The elves for example weren't "magical" so much as they were wise and had such exceptional skill it looked like magic to outsiders.

Saruman had wisdom but abandoned it for technology since it allowed him to acquire power quickly and efficiently... Which is a running theme of Aule's disciples.
