It's a form of journalism manipulation.
We the studio will get you an early screening or an early copy, you can get first dibs on a review, but you can't release it until we've got all the goyims money.
An early review can make or break a film because a lot of people still base their viewings on reviews. So if it's negative there goes a load of your buys. By manipulating critics with early views or even money they can keep them quiet so the unsuspecting movie goer wastes their money on the movie.

Mattel/Sony have gotten their money already for the toys/merch so why would they care? The retailers are the ones who lose out on the profits and potential mark up. I guess it does show that kids don't care for the toys, though it's been a trend that most kids aren't into toys and most toys of that type are bought by "adult collectors".
I guess any more possible figures that were going to be made (though since it's a movie there probably wasn't anything until the next movie) probably won't be ordered so I guess Mattel would lose out in the long run, but honestly fuck Matty.

I got back from a preview screening a bit ago. It's a good movie. It's not really an OG Ghostbusters style. Doesn't have that same razor sharp comedy. But it's a good Paul Feig style movie. Few things bothered me. Couple of the cameos could have been cut. The ghost fighting sequence with all the gadgets was dumb and most of it seemed pretty poorly shot. Like none of them were available at the same time.
