I preferred Capaldi with the shorter, Deep Breath hair. It works well with his initial costume and makes him look more sophisticated. Although the longer hair works with the hoodie ensemble.

The ghosting in the Library episodes.
"Don't cremate me"

Writing a sad story about the bleakness of reality wouldn't be sabotaging the show. I love the Daleks, but ever since the gold ones got BTFO'd by the paradigm they've appeared weak. Not to mention they never fucking kill anyone anymore.
The design outstayed its welcome. At least the paradigm were intimidating and i'd love to see them back, albeit with a tweaked design. (they need to lose the huge arse and also the 'real eye' they have is stupid)

I feel like Daleks are one of those things that people with only an outside knowledge of Doctor Who instantly know. They've gotten to the point where they are an icon of the show and I have a feeling that the showrunners are a bit scared of tweaking their design.

That being said I would love for them to switch up the design almost completely, they are very much a villain for a different era of TV. They've only done minor changes to dalek armor for the 40 years they've been on TV, imagine if the Cybermen still looked like dudes in cloth suits with tinfoil lining their mouths and freezing units strapped to their chests.
>>
>>71737672
Daleks are Daleks because of their design. Their characterization is barebones, and their only raison d'etre is that bitches love saltshakers of death.

>>
>>71737672
The point of the cybermen is that they constantly upgrade, so it makes sense that they're constantly changing.

The Daleks see themselves as essentially the ubermensch, the perfect race. Plus, the Dalek design is so iconic that it wouldn't be a Dalek if it was changed completely.

I personally prefer the first Dalek design. It's simple. They're nasty little things and are almost waspish - the current Daleks are basically heavyweight tanks.
>>
>>71737775
Apparently it's shit.
>>
>>71737672
The Cybermen have gone through countless changes (and considerable downgrades, DESU) because no version of them has ever truly caught on and producers have rarely understood how to make them effective.
The Daleks actually struck on an iconic design from the outset (and the success of the gold redesign in 2005 is a sign that it doesn't really need to be radically altered. I'm up for adjustments, tweaking the aesthetic or size to make them more threatening, but the fundamental silhouette doesn't need to go anywhere).

The Cybermen would have done far, far better as a recurring villain over the years if they had actually committed to improving the original Mondasians rather than throwing them out for crappier robot-ish versions.

Cybermen are more about concept. They are people's minds trapped inside robot shells. Exactly how robot their shells are varies.

Daleks are yelling things with cool design, but their concept is basically "Aliens who hate the whole world just because". But people love them because they look cool.

Why do Cybermen exist is anyone's guess. They usually don't work, their former humanity does not come forefront all that often and the last 50 years it seems writers were salvaging concept they felt obligated to reuse for some reason.

>the last 50 years it seems writers were salvaging concept they felt obligated to reuse for some reason.
exactly. it feels like showrunners only use them because they have become a staple of the show and not because they're genuinely interested in using them. They're the only monsters I would actually call meme-enemies. Nobody knows what the point behind them is anymore, everybody just uses them because everybody else uses them.
>>
>>71737910
>Cybermen are more about concept. They are people's minds trapped inside robot shells. Exactly how robot their shells are varies.
See, I think there's absolutely visual and physical horror you can (and should try to) achieve with Cybermen. I don't think TV Doctor Who can truly get away with having a recurring 'monster' that's just concept where the design is irrelevant, the visual design of the monster is half of its presence in the show.

When they first emerged they weren't just brains plopped in a mechanical shell, they were people who had brutally replaced different parts of their body, and visually they were creepy because they looked (and moved, and talked) like something still partially organic. People mock the cloth faces but the idea behind them is ungodly eerie, a moving face veiled behind a stretched layer of some fibrous material, like the ghost of a face you can just barely make out. The image is of humanity corrupted, rather than just swapped out, and that's viscerally unsettling because as human beings we're constantly looking to recognise other humans - so if something interrupts that recognition even a bit, our brains tell us something is wrong. re: uncanny valley. It's probably strongest in the face, but it applies to all aspects of humanity.

Over the years the Cybermen designs have lost touch with this principle more and more, going back and forth. I think RTD's "brain removed and placed in a stomping clockwork toy with joints" Cybermen might have been the nadir, design-wise (the current ones still have various unpleasant carryovers, but at least the figure and face moved back towards human-like).
>>
>>71737398
I think the paradigm Daleks were an attempt to change the design but due to the backlash, they were dropped and the gold ones stayed.

It was nice seeing classic looking Daleks in Magicians Apprentice and I hope they become more prevalent.

I once saw someone mention how there were no paradigm Daleks in those episodes and that there could be another Dalek faction war like Remembrance.

>>71738083
I never noticed that before, thanks
>>
>tfw Nightmare in Silver is a really good episode title but the episode is shit
>>
>>71738225
I think it's rude to call people who use prosthetics creepy. Some of them were in wars you know.

Either way, there's only so many things to say about their condition. Tragic how they abandoned their humanity to survive. And scary how they want to snatch your brain to boost their ranks. That's about it.

Doctor Who, I think, overall isn't well suited to see monsters return.

To be fair, the original cybermen are still easily the scariest and still the ones that best portray the body horror thing they were originally going for.

The thing about the daleks is that their design is the sole reason they became so immensely popular in the first place, their origins and motivations are entirely secondary so changing the design even a little bit would be a big decision.

The problem is the daleks are often portrayed completely straightly as being the scariest thing ever which... they're not, even if they look great. I don't know exactly what sort of reaction the daleks should elicit though.

Or maybe the daleks would be totally fine if we didn't have to have an obligatory appearance every season
