In no order

28 Days Later
Dawn of the Dead
The Descent
House of the Devil (I am including it cause the first 60 minutes was near fucking perfect)
The Loved Ones
Creep
The Others (Super underrated though it really is PG13 horror but very suspenseful)
The Mist

You know what would have made this movie perfect? Basically a scene at the very beginning similar to the opening of Friday the 13th (2009). We see a group of campers in the midst of being killed. Maybe it's the last person alive running through the woulds. She/he gets killed by something off screen, but we some grizzly tool or something that alludes to the killer being one of the monsters we see later in the film. THEN it cuts to the main group of the film and shows their entire experience.

My point being that I wish we saw more of what the complex had to offer, more of the other monsters even if just a little bit more. There was too much there that we didn't see enough of. Granted at the end they do show a lot of the other monsters in action. But a scene like the one I described at the very beginning would have rounded things out really nicely imo.
>>
>>71728390

It's a good flick senpai, but it ain't horror. Extreme scenes don't make it horror - it's an action movie.

not a fan of that shit, kid was annoying too
really liked the monster design though, they did a fantastic job of ramping up the threats consistent through the movie
>>
>>71728544
Nah man, the cold open was one of the best parts
>>
>>71728557
>IT WAS ALL A DREAM

It was obviously not a dream if the ornament appeared after the climax. The kid is stuck in an eternal hell, repeating the same carnage that was shown through the movie - or at the very least becoming victim to endless torment.

Also the kid was a pretty goddamn good actor compared to literally any other modern movie. If you really got that upset by the ending, chances are, you're too much of a fucking retard to understand ambiguity.

The Conjuring.

Watch The Collector.
Don't google it or check what it's about. IMDB and trailers spoil one of the main twist. The horror antagonist is scary but fun in how he just has a complete blast doing what he does. The movie is the next step in slasher movies.

The movie is absurdly bad.
>>
>>71732202

Isn't that the premise of one of The Hills Have Eyes remakes?
>>
>>71726203

After checking out Green Room and Blue Ruin, I decided to watch Jeremy Saulnier's first feature Murder Party. It's not the greatest horror movie ever made and it's clearly a low budget amateur production (although in this case, it almost gives it an 80's-esque charm), especially compared to his next two projects, but god damn was that a fun and enjoyable horror film.

Damn shame it never got a Bluray release.

I recommend it, I think it's a great Halloween party kind of movie.

Also: Avoid the trailer because it spoils way too much.

Other misc great but not the greatest horror flicks I've seen lately:

Hush
Last Shift
Bone Tomahawk (though it's more of a western with horror elements)
Honeymoon

Short and sweet, it's a very simple movie with a fun premise and really good gore effects.

Like I said, it's not GOAT but it's a unique enough take on the home invasion/slasher genre that I ended up enjoying it a lot.

Plus I like John Gallagher Jr. in the villain role.

>>71737834

The Bay is fantastic. I'm pretty desensitized to a lot of this kind of stuff, but it's one of the few movies in recent memory to genuinely make me feel unsettled. Something about the actual horrific way that the parasites kill people and the way it portrayed the chaos surrounding the outbreak, just brilliant.

Really underrated.

>>71735731
Glad you mentioned it, Anon, as I was about to. Really liked this movie. Great atmosphere.
>>
>>71738099

I disagree about the whole deaf thing not being a big factor. It added a lot of tension to the film, and changed the way that the protagonist had to approach defending herself throughout the film because of her constant paranoia.

I also loved the moments of him ninjaing around her house and scoping it out before she realized that he was there. Funny stuff.

The scene where she writes the killer a written message was also really good.

And I liked that under the creepy mask the killer ended up being just some weird dude, and not some infallible killing machine. He got his shit kicked in almost as much as the protagonist.

But again I guess we'll just have to agree to disagree on this movie in general.

Different strokes or whatever.

I might just be a sucker for horror anthologies, but I'm gonna say Trick 'r Treat is the best horror movie to come out in the last decade and an essential Halloween-core movie.

Not the scariest, but certainly the most fun.

It hits all the right notes for me, and sums up perfectly everything I love about both that style of campy horror and the actual holiday itself.

Simply perfection.
>>
>>71738395
no i'm objectively right, it was pure shit. there is no moment in the movie which could not have worked just as well, or exactly the same were she not deaf. it served as promo bait but didn't deliver, a lot like the killers mask. having your lead say no lines of dialogue just sucks as well and she was bad in general and couldn't carry the film.. what do we actually learn about her "character"? ..that shes deaf, uses apple products, can't cook, writes, has a cat named "bitch" (reddit). this is not a character its just a bunch of arbitrary (and cliche) details. the killer also has no character either and neither does the location.. usually you use a location to provide character background for its residents or at least a mood, but theres nothing here. theres really nothing at all in this movie of note.

theres no good soundtrack, no good kills, no interesting weapons, killer sucks, there are no good characters, the location is boring, the entire film is cliche, its filled to the brim with plotholes. its not scary, so its shit horror. its not thrilling or an interesting story/character so its a shit thriller.

go watch "ils" (them) or the strangers, for decent home invasion movies. you're next/the descent/high tension, if you want the "hapless female turned badass" trope done right. unbreakable for how to make a disabled character, who's disability actually defines his character, or maybe silent house if you want some single location with female character horror.

honestly this movie pissed me off, it was that bad. im amazed a "writer" wrote this, and that absentia/occulus director worked on it, cause those movies were good.

The original Pulse (Kairo, 2001) has such great tension, I love it. The last encounter with a spooky ghost in particularly is nervewracking.

watched this the other day. definitely had some spooky moments and a nice premise, but it was also boring and not that scary... but i did go in with big expectations

Fuck off, Eric.

That's fair, it's mostly the tension that got to me, it's really hopeless and nihilistic feeling. Like they're never on some quest all determined to figure out how to fix everything, there's no hope to be found.

Probably helped that the copy I saw was 480p, lower quality copies tend to make shit like this scarier for me.

The only kind of recent horror movie that really freaked me out for Atrocious, but the final 2 minutes were a letdown imo.

Kill List is my personal favorite (out of what I've seen so far)

I really like the mood change after the hammer torture scene. Up until that point it it was a crime/mystery film with odd things occurring, most of the kills are discretion shots and their is little to no blood. Then at the halfway point they hit you with a violent torture scene to mess with your expectations, then the movie has a tone shift to straight horror a little bit after. Really liked the bait and switch.

Probably atmospheric psychological horror like Polanski's apartment trilogy (Repulsion, The Tenant, Rosemary's Baby), Kairo, Session 9, and art house flicks like Suspiria and Berberian Sound Studio, which is strangely horrifying.

The part where the first ghost does that weird stutter-step when she trips made the entire theater gasp. Never heard something like that before.

>I can't even think of any except for Dog Soldiers and maybe the first Resident Evil.

The Resident Evil movie failed miserably at that though what people wanted was some B action movie with trained personnel in what more or less was a "boo haunted house game"

This has never happened before.

My Aunt showed me this movie, along with the evil deads when I was 10-11, stayed up all night with her eating candy and drinking soda.
