You are watching a movie after all, and it's hands down the best representation that can be made. Some people may even get Butt hurt about Bombadil even though he didn't drive the story forward at all. Some things just need to be left out because they really don't matter.
As an adaptation it works. It is better to have varied characters when they're not going to have a bigger arc. Not everyone needs to be wise and great, I think it's OK to take some shortcuts, makes for a more engaging narrative.
But again it is an adaptation, a different take on the material and while there are things I don't like about it, on the whole it works pretty well.
