It could have been an actual Horror Story, about Hell. Or it could have been a commentary on the Vietnam War, or the military in general.

Yes it could have been those things but if it was then it would've been an entirely different movie. If you want to watch a movie about hell or a commentary on the vietnam war then go watch those movies, they exist but they are not this movie. It's a psycological horror/thiller.
