Useless characters added in just to pander to a demographic.
China is getting more and more influence over Hollywood, especially the Chinese Censorship Board.
That's why the remake of Red Dawn sucked so badly, it had to be refilmed due to complaints from China because China was initially allied with North Korea for the invasion and China didn't like being portrayed as the "bad guy" so the whole film had to have reshoots and reedits before release to remove all the Chinese references.
