I think Doctor Who should be treated as event television.

It's only on twelve weeks a year and it should have a gigantic budget.

All the episodes should have the production values of a movie, which means famous actors, good CGI, great writers,...
>>
>>71701482
it's just kinda neat, yknow

Good luck with that...

Will Chibnall save use from terrible Moffat style of storytelling?

His Torchwood was more partial to terrible RTD style of storytelling but that's Torchwood with all it entails.

>It breathed life into the stale EDAs by setting up an amazing all-encompassing future plotline, reintroducing the Time War to the universe
>It was a veritable treasure-trove of fantastic worldbuilding: Celestis, Shift, Enemy, Faction Paradox, etc
>The plot twist was genuinely unexpected
>It set precedent / inspiration for a number of well-regarded NuWho stories (Pandorica, Doctor's Wife, Name of the Doctor, Day of the Moon, End of Time)
>The whole thing is written in Larry's enjoyable prose
I don't really see a downside desu. Even Moffat has said it's his favorite Doctor Who story. Miles broke a LOT of ground in it, and I think the universe would be vastly different without it.
>>
If you had a TARDIS and the plot armour of The Doctor what would you do?

I can't believe most of you cunts like and defend what Moffat's done with the show. I honestly feel Doctor Who has never been worse than it is now. Even fucking late 80s Who was more fun and memorable.

If Chibnall doesn't do a 180 and take it somewhere completely different, then the show will quite rightly die.

So longer than most British drama series then.

What is it with Doctor Who fans and seeing the BBC as the Doctor Who Company? You're asking them to basically not put money into anything else, just so the weird kids' show with the funny aliens can acquire the trappings of Hollywood.

What

I can't even begin to describe what I think is wrong with the show now, because pretty much everything is. I hate every second of it. Every element of it is wrong.

Creative, talented people in the Classic era did far more than Moffat ever did, on a shoe-sting budget. The problem isn't the money, it's the writers.

It's all utter shit. No style, no character. No Douglas Adamsian charm. Nothing new. Nothing fun. Only awful characters and mind-numbing plots.

You're not wrong that the death of Top Gear puts more pressure on Doctor Who, but they still might not be completely confident in putting all their eggs in Doctor Who's basket.
Doctor Who is trapped in the incredibly weird space between 'award-winning fantasy drama' and 'accessible episodic family show' and it's a bugger of a thing to get right. Not to suggest that the current writing team doesn't need a major injection of new blood, but if you throw an acclaimed writer like Neil Gaiman at it he might either produce The Doctor's Wife or Nightmare in Silver. And on the production/casting side, there's a question of who is actually interested in working on it in the first place? And how much money can you throw at them before you've basically spent everyone's TV license?
I salivate as much as anyone at the idea of Doctor Who as the biggest and best thing on television, but there are sincere obstacles in the way.

So I just started watching Doctor Who again a few weeks ago, and I have to say that I'm loving Capaldi, but I am curious as to what /who/ thinks of Danny Pink? Personally I thought he was the worst recurring character in the season, he was so personality-less and mild, and he mumbled all of his lines. I never really bought that Clara loved him. What do you guys think?

>>71702993

>>
>>71702993
Yeah pretty much agreed. The actor playing him didn't bring a lot of charisma or presence compared to Capaldi or Coleman, and the points at which we should have started to like him weren't handled with the finesse they needed on the writing/direction front.
It's a shame because otherwise his character arc in the finale could have been quite decent.
>>
>>71702993
Danny sucks, but he was an important building black to make sure Clara sucked less.
>>
>>71702369
Go back to Planet Mondas.
>>
>>71702993
The actor was bad, he sucked the life out of any scene he was in and had no chemistry with Jenna. Especially compared to Capaldi/Jenna who worked well together. Also S9 is better btw.
>>
>>71703071
I was mildly disappointed in the finale. The concept of "Hell" or the afterlife that they did could have been a cool story to investigate on its own, but then they had to go and throw the Master in (and I think she did a good job - but probably should have been saved for something later) and then cybermen, and UNIT, and it was all too much.

>>71703095
I actually felt he weighed her down. I never believed that she really loved him even an eighth as much as she loved travelling with the Doctor.
>>
>>71703146
I've watched S9 up to the Zygon episodes, which I haven't started yet. S9 is really good so far, but I can't bring myself to watch the two-parter with that UNIT woman with the glasses, she's the most annoying, tumblr character ever.

I'm not sure they'd get away with it if they did a whole story about that concept, the whole "don't cremate me!" thing is more existentially fucked up than Doctor Who usually goes (IIRC it got like 124 complaints, but the BBC told them to fuck off because it was just part of Missy's scam and didn't actually have any implications for kid viewers' dead relatives).

But that was what made it so cool - it was something Who hadn't really done before, and the implications of such a shitty afterlife was interesting to think about. They could have had the Doctor end the whole thing, but it would've been interesting to focus on it. Instead they fell back to the easy route of "Doctor must save the world from ____"
>>
>>71703285
Just do it. At the end of the day, you are upset about a plain woman who wears glasses, has an inhaler and likes the Doctor. She doesn't have any wacky tumblr lines, she doesn't ship the Doctor with the Master, she doesn't dress up as the TARDIS, she doesn't pester him for an autograph. The hate of her is drastically overblown.

Why is regeneration so shitty? That was one of the few parts that actually did make it into DotD.

Honestly I'm sort of glad whoever sound mixed it didn't go with most of Gold's intended compositions for scenes. There are bits on that soundtrack that wouldn't have fit the corresponding bit of the episode at all.
For example, the music they reused for the Curator scene is melancholy and grand but subdued. Whereas the actual "Song for Four" in the soundtrack is, while not unpleasant, this plinky plonky piano guitar thing (they ended up using it nicely in the 'same sonic, different case' scene) that would have just been way too on-the-nose and "feel emotions now!" for Tom Baker's performance.

All from the 1965 Dalek Book. The only canon you need.

Does anyone else think The Two Masters is inspired by Faction Paradox? The Cult of the Heretic seem very similar to the Faction, especially how they induct members of lesser races. When "Time Lord biodata" gets mentioned, it's quite clearly in the Larry Miles sense of being someone's 4D essence, and the characters even have a conversation about the grandfather paradox at one point.

yeah, that's what I've been thinking too. No idea if it's possible in terms of formatting but in my opinion for each article there should be two big tabs, one for informations out of Doctor Who stories and one for informations from non-doctor-who stories (torchwood and other spinoffs for example), and these in turn would have undertabs that separate the informations again by publisher. After all, a DWM-comic-strip is much more likely to reference an older DWM-comic-story than it is to reference a, say, Big Finish audio. I find it hard to describe, I might doodle it down later.

I dont know there:regeneration seems to have the ability to do more than shake the cells up, I think it also reconfigures those cells as well, not in a biological way, but in a temporal way:the 3rd and 10th doctors both died of radiation poisoning, but the expulsion of said radiation by way of escaping the cells during a regeneration would have killed the brig and sarah jane and left the tardis irradiated. I say temporal because it seems theres just no where for it to go spacially. The remaining heart accesses the time vortex and overbeats itself.

In which case, if the doctor lost all his blood he could still regenerate, but i think it explains why the effect is the way it is now(the time vortex). It also explainsthat 8th doctor novel plot when he lost a heart and couldnt regenerate

I can't imagine any nuwho Doctors doing something like this
>9 would have a PTSD flashback and refuse to get in then go up to a dalek, rip out its laser and then proceed to start attacking every dalek around him with it
>10 would get get really emotional and start talking about how there is another way
>11 would do one of his signature mood changes where he goes from really happy to really emo and starts yelling a lot about how he will never stoop so low as to pretend to be a dalek
>12 would start ranting about how daleks are evil and by extension their appearance is evil which by another extension would make him evil by just acting like one

I'm not sure where you're getting most of this. I can see 9 or 10 having the PTSD but climbing inside an empty Dalek case would be great fun, 12 has almost done the same thing by throwing Davros out of his chair.

Some prime Eccles faces in here, don't miss.
>>
I like Capaldi's performances but I generally don't get the sense of public enthusiasm that existed with Eccleston, Tennant (obviously) or Smith.

Some of us on here sneer at awards like the NTAs but the fact that he's been snubbed two years in a row making him the first Doctor since the show's return to miss out on an acting nod is, imo, telling. Considering how excited and/or intrigued fans and casuals were when he was announced 3 years ago I put the blame not on his age but a characterization in series 8 that wasn't audience friendly and stories that haven't connected if the lower AIs are anything to go by.

I disagree. I think its a natural rise and fall for the show:coming off an anniversary year, a regeneration and a big year expansion for doctor who, its very natural for series 8, which was the first unbroken season in 3 or 4 years, to create a sense of fatigue to the audience in things Who related. It isn't that doctor who sucked in that time, but that the hype had a natural slow down to it. Series 10 and whithouse showrunning will do a lot to curb the freefall, but capaldi is the unfortunate victim here for series 8
