An alien civilization capable of interstellar travel will be much much more intelligent than the naturally evolved apes here on earth. Imagine a conscious being with the processing power of a supercomputer, they could learn a language in a millisecond so analyzing all of human society and figuring out ways to manipulate it wouldn't be a challenge.
A small probe orbiting earth could for instance gain internet access, trade bitcoins and start bribing people to do its bidding and hack into computers. People would become millionaires overnight by serving it and if they betray them their money will vanish and the police will come in the morning and find child pornography on their computer. It could conquer the world this way and set about using our resources to create copies of itself to eventually replace humans.
