What do you guys think about Clerks? Did you know he made it with only $30k?
>>
They should have gone with the original ending
>>
>>71646010
did he use 5k then spend the rest on burgers cause thats what it looks like
>>
>>71646010
Clerks was smart funny and dumb funny at the same time.
>>
That is 30k more than I will ever make in this lifetime
>>
>>71646042
What was the original ending?
>>
>in a row?
>>
>>71646044
more than half of the money was spent on soundtracks as far as i remember
>>
>>71646010
The only time I watched it was when I was probably 17 with a bunch of friends. We'd all just smoked a some WEED LMAO and it was the end of the night so we came inside to sleep and someone put this on. All I remember is us saying how boring it is and I think someone turned it off halfway through. Then I slept on the wooden floor and it was really uncomfortable.
>>
>>71646081
Dante gets shot by a guy robbing the store
>>
>>71646081
someone robs the store and the main character gets shot, dies. KS said people were too depressed with the ending at early screenings so he changed it. I understand the sentiment of that but I do think he should have taken the bolder route and kept the first ending
>>
>>71646096

No, 30k was the actual film. Another 200k was spent on the soundtrack by the studio. It's easy to spend 30k for the space, for all the food and props that get wrecked, paying the actors, etc, plus the cameras, film, etc.
>>
>>71646119
>>71646150
kek

I have the DVD that includes the original cut of the film with that ending

Super overrated, and Kevin Smith is a fat, no talent hack
>>
>>71646150

Eh I disagree. Dante finally figures out that it's his own fault his life is so unpleasant and decides to do something about it. Getting shot, while fitting with the melancholy attitude of the movie, would just make it all feel rather pointless.

A pretty fantastic movie.
>>
Lynch made Eraserhead for 10k. No wonder Clerks is 3x better.
>>
A product of it's time whose appeal will forever be lost to those born after Gen-X (OK Gen-Y liked it too).

Didn't age as badly as Mallrats though
>>
>>71646081

POV of that one chick chugging all those dicks
>>
>>71646150
I don't think so. Him getting shot is super anticlimactic in a very "student film-y" way. It holds up better with the ending we got.
>>
>>71646342

Clerks reads like a script that went through many well-thought out drafts as the plot and ideas were polished.

Mallrats reads like a first-draft followup with a gratuitous Stan Lee cameo before that was even a thing.
>>
>>71646342
>I bet Superman blows a load like a shotgun, the only way he could have sex with a normal woman is with a kryptonite condom, but that would kill him
Unpausing the sega after leaving it on all night is one of the most dated things I can think of in the movie

This

I can quote Clerks to anyone around 38~28 and they'll get it 75% of the time. Outside of that age range 10% of the time. Fuck we're old.
>>
i really loved it when it first came out.
>>
>>71646102
cool blog post.
>>
>>71646520

I'm 23 and the only quote I would recognize is the one about how many dicks his GF sucked, and I don't even remember the number

I watched it when I was like 16 though

my 24 year old brother and I quote the "bringing back porchmonkey" at least once every 3-4 months when we see each other though. that and Howard Stern Show shit.
>>
That star wars contractor sideline with the roofer was so fucking funny. I don't tremendously remember how it went now but it was great
>>
>>71646564
Thanks. Do you want to sign up for my newsletter?
>>
>>71646010
Whenever they claim a low budget, they never include promotional, distribution and printing costs. Also it's funny because most of the budget went to the soundtrack.

>anyway I get this offer for a shingle job up in the heights and they tell me they'll pay double if I get it done in one day but then I found out who owns the place, Dominic Bambino
>Baby Face Bambino?
>Exactly, so I pass the job on to a friend of mine and what happens? He gets whacked
>See the money was good but I passed because I knew who it was for and I can tell you any contractor on that death star knew who he was working for
>A roofer listens to his heart not his wallet
>>
>>71646678
The other ending was much better, this one is just sad
>>
>>71646612
The contractors working on the Death Star who died when the rebels destroyed it. Roofer guy compared it to his buddy taking a job with a mob boss and getting killed for being seen there, iirc, and said it's their fault and should have known better.

Agreed, it was excellent.
>>
>>71646780
I agree, but you asked for it.
>>
>>71646612
>That star wars contractor sideline

My favorite part of the movie.
It changes how you think about things.
>>
>>71646636
30k is what it cost to produce. Why would they include marketing in the production budget?
>>
>>71646797
I immediately started thinking about it and odds are droids did all the construction work. Because it doesn't fucking make sense otherwise.
>>
>>71646847
>Why would they include marketing in the production budget?
Because indie filmmakers without studio backing have to handle all of that themselves, and it's not a fair comparison.
>>
>>71646888
I thought they went on the festival circuit then got picked up by Weinstein/Miramax. Not sure how much Smith himself spent on marketing Clerks

>>
>>71646010
IMO it's actually become better with age, with the rise of "only 90's kids will remember this" nostalgia for the era it's pretty jarring to be reminded of just how bleak life in the 90's really was for young members of Generation X

Mallrats was basically Clerks set at a mall but instead of the workers talking about their lives being in a rut it was a romantic conquest movie.
>>

>>
>>71647131
I'd spend time in a VR Quick Stop. Shit, go around Kevin Smith and hire Mewes and shit for pennies on the dollar. I bet all of them would suck mad dick for work. They'd offer it up. You'd have to say no thanks, Jason, I just want you to deliver some lines. Just have them spit out hours and hours of bullshit, and if they stutter or don't nail a delivery (which they rarely did anyway) then it pretty much matches up with the source material (or in this case "source" material). Broadcast your budget: next to fucking nothing. This piques fans interest, most of whom hopefully see 2016 Smith as Jabba the Hutt, a creature who's taken their fond memories of the 90s and absolutely skewered them by having Clerks, Jersey Girl and Tusk on the same imdb page. That's when the fans turn on him and turn to us. Our movie. Our shark.

I'm telling you guys, we could make theoretical hundreds.
>>
>>71646678
>white robber

No wonder they cut this ending. Fantasy totally ruins immersion.
>>
Smith's descent as a filmmaker began immediately after Clerks and never bothered to stop. It's still falling.

In his current state, if he were making (or god forbid remaking) Clerks today, he'd show the audience Randal tipping the casket over. You know he would.
>>
>>71647935
I can see it now...

>Randal tips the casket
>sound of record stopping

The only reason he didn't show it was because he couldn't afford to shoot the scene, it was in the original script. The Clerk's animation team recreated it as a DVD bonus.

And it would have looked like trash. He'd have needed to spend quite a bit of money in post which means he'd either have to build a budget suite or send it out to a company. If you don't know what the fuck you're doing on an editing suite then you're going to need to hire someone. You don't just point and shoot a DSLR or any digital camera and get a final product that is ready to be shown. Primer did it for less but it's a special case.

With film, however, you basically do shoot it and get a product ready to be shown. So yeah, you spend about $30 per 2 and a half minutes of film. You process it for w/e rate you can get at a lab and then you literally cut it and tape/glue it by hand.

Film is usually more expensive but when it's 16mm stock, it's not by much.

wouldn't the stormtroopers also have been responsible for the construction work? they're not like the clone troopers who are raised to fight from birth. they were regular recruits from across the galaxy. it's not impossible that they had knowledge of plumbing and shit prior to joining which then got them placed in construction work or something. that would partly explain why they're so fucking awful at shooting. rather than dedicate all their waking hours at the practice range, they're helping construct the death star and other stuff.

Yoga Hosiers looks like it's gonna be aight.
Kevin does his best when he just tells a simple relatable story set in real life.

Liked it as a teenager, rewatching recently it's still good but trying too hard to be clever. Lots of lines are pretty cringeworthy and characters like the one who works in the video store (forget his name) seem much less believable and forced. for me, clerks is primarily a cartoon. then there's some movie that the guy did before

we are living in the bad parallel universe where Kevin Smith chose to be on ABC instead of UPN. on UPN, it aired after Dilbert. their synergy made both shows viable for several more years.

Kevin Smith never made a movie ever again. Dave Mandel and Brian Kelley continued to make Clerks into something much weirder and funnier than the movie ever was but I also give Kevin Smith and Scott Mosier a lot of credit because they were heavily involved in the writing, and allowed the show to go so far away from what the movie was
