Cimino made some fine films, but had a clumsy career. Kiarostami is a true giant.

>he needs a sticky
i wish people would stop misunderstanding this concept
stickies serve only single purpose: to contain posts into one thread and prevent the board being spammed with 10 different threads all discussing the same thing. kiarostami simply isnt pleb friendly enough to warrant giving him a sticky
giving a person a sticky has aboslutely nothing to do with how great you think he was
>>
>>71634885
He was 76. Every other person in their late 70's has some sort of terminal illness. You don't operate someone who is ~80 and has cancer.

>>
>>71634225
Start with Certified Copy, it's his most accessible and stars qt Juliet Binoche. If you like that, I'd recommend going on to Close Up and A Taste of Cherry (the latter film won the Palme d'Or). If you enjoy both of those, then watch the Koker trilogy in order. And, if you like all of those, then try his other films since by then you'll be able to tolerate his patient style.

He was one of my favorite filmmakers. All of his films feel like a meditation. They become hypnotic.

If you're interested in other Iranian filmmakers after you check out Kiarostami, I'd recommend Jafar Panahi and the father-daughter Makhmalbafs

Now that Kiarostami is gone...

1) Bong Joon-Ho
2) Al Weerasethakul
3) Paul Thomas Anderson
4) The Dardenne Bros.
5) Claire Denis
6) Wong Kar-Wair
7) Alfonso Cauron
8) Takashi Miike
9) Wes Anderson
10 Spike Jonze/Charlie Kaufman collabs or solo projects

I probably would have considered Kiarostami #1 or #2 before today.

I will continue to watch all of those filmmakers, no matter what projects they choose. I trust them to do something interesting with any material they set their minds to.

Godard hasn't made a good movie in more than 3 decades.

His last truly great film was 13 Assassins. For Love's Sake is a good bit of fun but far from a masterpiece and not for everybody.
>>
>>71639376
Weerasethakul often goes by "Al" because his name is long and hard to say. The Wong Kar-Wai thing was a typo

I think Godard, like Woody Allen, peaked early and has kind of dragged on with the same topics for his career. Except I'd rather watch Allen's newer movies than Godard's. Hell, I'd rather watch Match Point than Le Mepris.

It's just my opinion, m8s. Breathless is one of my favorite movies of all-time, but at the same time I would hate, fucking hate, to ever watch Alphaville again. If you hate me for that, then blow me.
