Box Office: 'The BFG' Could Be Steven Spielberg's

>Yes, unless Walt Disney pulls off a miracle overseas, Steven Spielberg’s The BFG will be that rarest of things: A Steven Spielberg box office bomb. The $140 million fantasy film, based on a Roald Dahl book, will earn around $22 million over the July 4th holiday.
>Most people will argue that the star-studded and critically-trashed 1941 was Steven Spielberg’s first box office disaster. And while the film did only make $31 million domestic on a $35m budget, it did make $92m worldwide, thus nearly tripling its budget. So for this argument, I would consider it a disappointment rather than an outright disaster.

Why don't goyim like Spielberg anymore? Did they not like Schindler's List?
>>

Was the actual movie any good? Not memein'
>>
>>71633007

I feel like cinema altogether is dying as a medium when paying attention to the sales this year

only generic and mindless movies make money while the actual thought-provoking ones are "disappointments" or even "disasters"
>>
>the bfg
>the big fucking giant
Who allowed this?
>>
>>71633007

It has a crappy title that doesn't clue you in to what the movie's about. Also the CGI looked kinda bad in the trailer.
>>
>>71633164

this. the future of entertainment is reaction videos, streams of people playing videogames, vine comedy bits, and the occasional stupid ultraviolent TV show like game of thrones or the walking dead or daredevil.

feature-length movies are old people shit.
>>
Don't worry, chinks and euros will eat that shit up just like they did for Warcraft.

While Hollywood is to blame for the poor state of film making, the signals the audience sends is a clear indicator that people do not want "thought provoking" or original movies anymore: they want sequels and prequels and cinematic universes. Almost all high profile Disney movies featuring a sliver of originality have failed miserably. Not even Steven Spielberg's name can make people go watch a movie that's not part of an already established franchise. Personally I am turned off by the excess of CGI in this film; as a side note I found the almost complete lack of CGI in Bridge of Spies extremely refreshing.

>>71633007

I didn't hear about the existence of this film until a week ago. That probably has something to do with it. It's a Roald Dahl book for God's sake. They could have spent a bit more on advertising.
>>
>>71633823

Like ID4 2, it made less than $50m on its opening weekend and came in below Finding Dory, now in its third weekend at #1 despite another 46% drop in revenue. That's really not good for a movie with a $180m budget. And, unlike ID4 2, it's not doing moderately well overseas to marginally make up for its failure in the States.

>>71633766

Because they're still taking them to see Finding Dory in droves. Disney should have put The BFG off a ways so as not to get trodden on by the fish movie.

>>71633164

When have tentpole movies ever been particularly thought provoking? The term "mindless summer action movie" exists for a reason - but to be honest, it's mostly those sorts of movies that are failing to achieve great heights this year. If you're really looking at this year's sales, you'd notice that what's making up most of the Top 5 are family films. Sure, Civil War & Deadpool are in there, but the other three are Finding Dory, The Jungle Book & Zootopia. To me, that says people are taking their kids to see movies, but not really seeing many for themselves.

you know I hate Judaism and what it's done to America and the world.

But i can't summon too much ill will towards Speilbergo.

He (and Scorsese) literally represent the end of Classic Hollywood-- in both tradition (they met the greats) and style.

I'm a little saddened by a Spielberg flop because it just gives an argument to some idiot millenial studio executive that will shovel money on the next Zack Snyder or some degenerate political project.

there will come a time when Spielberg, Scorsese and, yes, even Nolan won't be able to get financing to make a film. ;_;
>>
>>71633164
It's actually the mindless blockbuster movies that suffered the worst this year. BvS underperformed badly. same with X-men Apocalypse. TNMT 2 did ridiculously bad, just barely making its budget back. Warcraft was a domestic box office disaster only saved by China... Even a highly anticipated, critically praised behemoth like Civil War slightly underperformed.
>>
>>71634396
>But BvS made almost $900 mil.?

Globally. When the expectation was that it would make that much domestically, but instead made only about $330m and sits at #6 for the year. It's a perfect example of how you can ostensibly make a lot of money, but still be seen as a failure.

Why can't Hollywood do Dahl properly?

Too scared to keep the dark elements of his films whilst still keeping the childlike wonder of his writing?

They even fucked up Matilda, despite having perfect casting for the Trunchbull.

book: a smart girl who happened to get powers
movie: a girl who got powers who happened to be smart.

book: she uses the powers to write a cryptic message the terrify the Trunchbull
film: she writes the message... then in a slapstick scene she uses her powers to everything in the room flying and make all the other kids fly.

Between the sheer amount of blockbusters being churned out, and people becoming increasingly aware of their mediocrity, it doesn't surprise me that so many are underperforming, if not outright failing. No one wants to see so many of them, so they just stick to the ones they like and are familiar with (which usually means Disney)

Problem is, no studio wants to be the one to cut down on blockbusters, so they'll keep making them and keep losing money. The only possible solution would be to start making them good, but let's not pretend that'll happen

Nah, it's not dying. It's just falling by the wayside as the dominant art-form. And it's changing.

The internet has brought a do-it-yourself ethic to filmmaking in the last decade or so. Whether you think most of the content on youtube is good or not (it isn't), it's hard to argue that there aren't more active filmmakers having their shit seen than ever before.

On top of that, cinema, like the novel before it, used to be the dominant art-form on the planet. It was the most profitable and the most consumed. Now, vidya games have taken the crown and they're only growing more immersive and elaborate. The gap will continue to widen.

Which doesn't mean cinema is dead. The novel isn't dead and tons of people continue to read as a hobby. What's happening is that the pleb masses are moving to the next big thing, as they've always done. In the future there will still be filmmakers and there will always be curators of the art who will continue writing the history of film.

I've been re-watching all the Bond films from the beginning and was blown away when I saw Dahl's name in the opening credits of YOLT. I had to look it up to make sure it was the same guy (despite it being the most distinct name on the planet).

It was always one of my favorite Connery movies but I've also always been slightly weeb.

this is going to be big at overseas. i live in europe most people liked trailer here at theaters.

it seems like harry potterish world with same age girl

I think rich Hollywood types underestimate how much of the viewing public is annoyed by vegetarians.
>>
>>71636553
You think the BFG's vegetarianism of all things is the reason this flopped?
>>
>>71634092
they all need to go full capeshit so we can hurry up and burst that bubble
>>
I didnt know about this movie existence until this thread tbqh
>>
>>71636603

It was a joke. If anything I think people are sick of these animated movies that try to look too realistic, and British accents in children's movies is so 1983.
>>
>>71635699
After a month the hype should die down.
>>
they didn't even advertise it, no dumb mcdonalds tie ins, no commericials, no toys or ads on pizza boxes nothing
>>
>>71633007
It was hardly marketed at all. Which is probably the reason why it flopped.

THEY SHOULD HAVE MADE THE MOVIE ABOUT THAT

SPIELBERG PRESENTS THE GIANT WEREWOLF VS THE GIANT GIANT (SPELLED OUT NO BULLSHIT)

TOP DOLLAR RIGHT THERE

There were like 9 trailers spammed on /tv/ daily
>>

>tfw /tv/ has never read this
Feels bad
>>
Wow, Disney and Spielberg are the dream team. 2016 has been ruthless. Audiences seem to be getting increasingly selective about what they'll spend money on.
>>
>>71639392
Most of /tv/ is between 18 and 25. As kids, they probably did, it's a very popular children's book.
>>
>>71639726
And thank god for that, all these lazy sequels, adaptations, and reboots failing is amazing. I can't believe the number of bombs, it's absolutely beautiful. The only thing that could make it more perfect is if even more smaller films hit it big instead of just 10 Cloverfield Lane and a couple of the horror moves - I don't give a shit about the genre, so don't ask me names.

Not really. Known entities >>>>> random movies.

For the most part. ID4-2 aside.

Xmen & BvS were shit
TMNT2 was good but the first one was a bit boring so it turned people off, they had to gut the movie because they were worried about people being pissed off with a White Shredder
>>
>>71640515

About a decade ago my gf at the time bought tickets to a live adaptation of the BFG to watch ironically on my birthday (which seemed awesome at the time and I never should have let her get away), but it actually kind of sucked.

Probably something about being on stage made it hard for them to get the creepy tone of Dahl, but it was just really not that interesting as an adult.
>>
>>71633007
Why is he working with fucking Disney? They all but sabotaged him by releasing it too close to Finding Dory.
>>
>>71639392
Children don't read anymore, which is probably another contribution to this movie doing so terribly.

Pffahahahahahaha.

No.

A slow-moving tale about a giant and a little girl is such an unappealing premise, it won't draw in action-oriented audiences.

Blame it on the fucking ticket prices for movies.
Its almost 40 dollars for two fucking people

it was better than Tarzan at least. It was good for like a good 60-70% as a slight quirky, but interesting movie, and then it turned into overly kiddy saccharine cop out schlock that betrays the dark undertones and overall wackiness of the Roald Dahl story
>>
>>71643539

>shitty helicopter parents that coddled me with mediocre feel good stories

I went to one of the shittiest public school systems in the country and we read most of the books in elementary school.

If you're actually American it's impossible that you haven't seen Willy Wonka, so should at least know that they're not "feel good stories", their dark and morbid, and you kind of get the feeling the author hated children.

TMNT II and Alice did poorly. BvS and X-Men didn't do as well as expected. Warcraft struggled everywhere except China. Zoolander 2 and Keanu didn't do too great.

You should commit suicide. You have no worth and only serve to waste oxygen other people could be breathing.

Disney (Civil War, Jungle Book, Zootopia, Finding Dory) and Fox (Deadpool) have owned this year. They both did have at least one disappointment. Alice II for Disney and Apocalypse for Fox.

Uncanny CGI doesn't sell. People think it's fucking weird. They should have learned this with Mars Needs Moms. Should have just done it animated or made the giants live action and made them look big with some sort of special effects fuckery.
>>
>>71633007
It was fucking shit regardless, this has no bearing on if people dont want thought provoking or original films anymore.

i thought it was something about butt fucking goyim. i literally have no idea what the BFG is. i haven't seen any advertisement or media coverage of it and only first heard about it yesterday. I'm usually pretty on top of current events, so if something slips under my radar I'm never surprised to hear it ended up flopping.
>>
They keep making all these reboots/adaptations of things that people in their 30's, who probably now have kids, would have grown up with, but the kids have no clue what they are, and the parents are like, "why the fuck would you ruin something from my childhood that was already fine the way it was.

TMNT, Point Break, and Ghostbusters come to mind, but there are obviously plenty more.

Yes, i'm aware that part of it is that people in that demographic are now in charge of making movies and want to be part of the things they grew up with (see the new Muppets movie).
>>
Films should only take place in England if it is a musical because then it's humorous how they talk. Otherwise it is just a film with people with stupid voices for no reason.
>>
>>71645834

Agreed, but the irony is that when British people intentionally try to make a comedy it's seldom funny.

You're implying audiences would be interested in yet another Lord of the Rings rip off which happens to be a five years too late adaptation of a video game franchise whose lore has been retconed into an unrecongnizable state in the last decade.
>>
>>71633007
Has the USA become the cinematic trash heap of the world? We make all the worst movies and we don't see them either but since all the subhumans love them its making us de facto irrelevant in the movie scene.

How long until they don't even GAF about catering to US audiences and along with rude people at theaters turns movies into a weird niche thing mostly retards and wistful elderly people trying to relive a better time try to do?
