It's not a European thing it was a groundbreaking work of literature challenging the social norms of the time (1945–1948). The story is about an adventurous child free of parental supervision free to live her, HER!, imagination and dreams instead of being beaten by strict parents which was the norm in the rel world then. Basically Pippi långstocking was a major influence in society realizing also children have a psychology, curious yet vulnerable thus eventually introducing legislation against beating children and in the long run making the children years of a human life viewed as sacred by society visible also in the illigality of children working before 15 years old.

I can see you've never had any deeper conversation about it with a senior who grew up under those conditions. I work at an elderly home. To sum it up, it fucked them up mentally, talked to one man who said he wished the things he would remember the best was the first time he kissed his wife or when they had their kids but as all that was already fading for him his fathers fists was a memory crystal clear still after all those years, burned onto his memory by fear. I never saw a man so much sad and in pain as when he told me about the times he had lost his temper and hit his own children despite promising himself never to become his dad in that regard.
