BBC knew that there was no way that the fans would become attached to whoever the new host was. Even A-list celebrities would fall short with the audience because they are replacing the original cast.
So the Beeb put in a guy that was mediocre, maybe a little bit rough on the edges (but not endearing like Clarkson). Someone that would be hated regardless of him being the replacement. This patsy was Evans.
Now, the Beeb is in the perfect spot, because we are all aching for this Evans' replacement -- we don't even give a shit who it is as long as it's better than what we currently have.
