If anything the books are great HBO/Amazon/Netflix series material since the plot is meandering and very stop and go so it's not suited for a movie's three act pacing.

How would you stretch The Gunslinger or Wind Through The Keyhole into entire seasons?
Here are my guesses as to how they'll adapt the story.
- 5 minute cheesy intro with hammy voice-over narration about how Gilead fell to wow the audiences with magickal cgi explosions and so on
- in modern-day New York there's a vigilante on the streets, an urban legend, a boogeyman called Roland. he's street-wise and the community likes him but he seems to appear and disappear out of thin air
- Shia-type fast talking Eddie and a sassy young woman who need no man stumble onto him and get to know him better
- Shia-type due to cirumstances starts to learn about how to be a gunslinger, sassy girl learns some stupid magic crap
- Evil Rust appears and starts to upturn police cars and summons a dark thundering cloud over NY and he wants to merge this world with Roland's world which he already corrupted(!)
- he is defeated by the trio, each showing off their strength
- in the end Evil Rust talks to his boss who tells him not to fail him again
- the trio enters the portal to Roland's world "to set things right"

For me almost the most memorable part of when I started reading The Dark Tower; what made it so cool at the time was the way I kept on misunderstanding the setting until it all fell into place.
I didn't know much about it; and it seemed to be a Western. Then The Gunslinger gradually showed you it was in fact a Post-Apocalyptic setting. Then the flashbacks gave the feeling that Before the End things were more of an Arthurian Knight setting. But eventually it becomes clear that even the Arthurian Knight parts are still taking place in a crapsack Post-Apocalyptic world, where there's just a little more order than what it will become.
The way it toyed with all those settings and they all seemed to work within one story blew my mind at the time.
Sorry for blog post, but whatever the Dark Tower became in later books, that's why I'm upset that the movie is going to get it so wrong.

In the Post-Apoc world, there was a figure comparable to King Arthur who managed somehow to rediscover how to make revolvers and bullets in limited amounts. These weapons and the gunslingers who used them were basically his knights of the round table who obtained some reverence, and those weapons also became legandary to some extent.
By the time the Dark Tower starts, what little order there is in the Post-Apoc world has broken down and only Roland, the last Gunslinger, is left from that time.
How much time is passing gets a bit soft in the series, and its not very clear, but thats part of the theme of the world breaking down and even ideas of time and space getting destroyed. There's basically two stages of post-apocalyptic setting, the shit and the very shit, and we never see the world before it collapses, only hear rumours.
