The first time I ever watched Altered States I think it was the first movie that scared me on an all-encompassing sense and not just a jump scare, scared of the dark sense.
And I'm not sure exactly why, but if I had to venture a guess, I would it was definitely due to the highly unique scenes like the one you posted where the goat headed christ on the crucifix pans out in the middle of the sky with the clouds zooming by.. jesus, just thinking about the first time I saw that, every hair on my body stood on end.
Shame about the almost comedic gorilla man parts and awkward ending.
