I love Rick and Morty but it's an ADD-riddled self congratulatory, try-hard piece of shit sometimes. The bleak stuff just adds to the humour, I think if you find it sad you need to watch more tv and movies.
Apparently Roiland (co-writer and voice actor for Morty and Rick) has to fight with a lot of writers to get these dark moments put in.
If you listen to their con appearances Roiland tells stories about how there's a lot of pushback when he wants the writing to go dark like this moment. The King Jellybean moment was a serious issue for a lot of people because they didn't like how an attempted rape scene would reflect on the series, they were telling Roiland, "What kind of show are we trying to make here?" in opposition of that scene.
I think the dark humor is brilliant. I do find it unnecessarily vulgar but I think it really adds a lot of punch to the series.
