In season 1 the Enterprise has civilian families on board. By First Contact it's basically a military ship. What changed?

The Defiant class is the only starship that was actually mentioned in the series as being designed to fight the Borg.

That picture gives a misleading impression of the size of the E compared to the D. The D is 642m long and the E is 685m. That's less than 10% in the difference. That pic makes it look a hell of a lot more. Here's an accurate comparison.

The Enterprise E was patrolling The Romulan Neutral zone at the start of First Contact, that's in 2373, and The Romulans didn't join the war until 2374. There are a few mentions in DS9 of how The Romulans aren't defending their borders and that The Dominion is sending skirmishes into Federation space through theirs, so The Enterprise probably fought in some of those battles, or at least responded to their distress signals.
Amazing how this show turned around after BoBW. First two seasons are so awful.
If this show had premiered today it would have been cancelled mid-season 2.
That forth season was fucking tops.
Please please please let the new series next year be good. The movie is gonna bomb, so if that series is bad we are fucked with no Trek for another 20 years.
