To be fair, there once was a time, I think about 8 or so years ago, where VLC DID have trouble with mkv files, which for a long time was the standard file for animu so it makes sense that it got a bad rep on /a/. That problem has long since been fixed though, so I have no idea why some people still keep going on about this shit.

VLC literally invented the x264 codec, even if you use something else you're still using it.
>>
>>71590832
nope, physical configuration of the middle ear creates a consistent upper limit
http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/037859559500031X

frequencies up to 50kHz can be heard through bone conduction, which doesn't help you since music is heard through air conduction
>>
>>71590832
Do you seriously believe having a slightly more sensitive hearing (you're probably younger than 20) improves your experience? You just hear a bit more shit nobody cares about. It hardly makes a difference.

I don't even bother plugging in my good headphones for whatever piece of media I want to listen anymore because hearing more shit isn't all that important—audiophilia is a fucking meme.

x264 is a software library, not a codec. You are thinking of h.264, which VLC had nothing to do with. x264 is used to encode to h.264

I'm saying that it's not impressive for a video player to run your extremely low bitrate video. It's like saying "I have the greatest computer in the world because it can run club penguin perfectly".

>>
>>71591104
mpc hc is definitely much better but that could just be slightly changed color options in one player
>>
>>71591003
>creates a consistent upper limit
yes. but it's not 20000hz for every single human obviously. i and hundreds of thouands of others can hear at ~22 and there have been records of humans hearing above that, without use of bone conduction.

my point is, humans aren't made in factories with standards set at certain frequencies. there is no exact upper human limit across the board.
>>
>>71591016
i'm only pointing out that 20 is not the limit. that's all.

No you wrong, h.264 is just the standard. x264 is a software that encodes to it hence a codec, just shut up.

>>

i think his point is that you don't use x264 when watching something in vlc, or some other media player. we don't use x264 in vlc, it's used to encode.

>>
>>71591345

That is the correct definition of a codec.

>you don't use x264 when watching something in vlc, or some other media player

You kinda do when the majority of video files comes from it, given it is the only open source library that encodes to h264 or we would still be stuck with xvids files.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Video_codec

>The literature does not seem to have a consistently used term for what this article and Wikipedia in general calls a video coding format. The H.264 specification calls H.261, H.262 and H.263, and H.264 video coding standards (i.e. consistent with this article's terminology, except that this actually uses "format" instead of "standard" to also cover formats which are not formally standardized), and does not contain the word codec.[3] The Alliance for Open Media clearly distinguishes between the AV1 video coding format and the accompanying codec they are developing, but calls the video coding format itself a video codec specification.[4] The VP9 specification calls the video coding format VP9 itself a codec.[5]

Wikipedia doesn't have a standard way to classify these things, so they have different terminology. They, and everyone else, are right when they call it a software library. At no point is x264 referenced by the video player. You are not using it when you are watching a h.264 video, you are watching something that was compressed by x264
>>
>>71592916
Sometimes the audio is a little bit off the video so you need to align them.
>>
>>71593183
That's interesting. I'm guessing that happens in older rips?

Damn dude the definition is on the first line, why the fuck you keep bragging.

>but calls the video coding format itself a video codec specification.[4] The VP9 specification calls the video coding format VP9 itself a codec.[5]

They are correct to say that because it is developed with an exclusive format, which is an internal part of a existing library necessarily. You can't separate the format from the software that generates it.
