There were more practical effects, real sets and real locations used in TH compared to Warcraft. Not to mention that the real sets in Warcraft looked like they were created by toddlers.
Also, just because it doesn't compare to LotR doesn't mean the Warcraft score can compare to the Hobbit score. Warcraft was literally just generic drums and the same generic chanting all the time. The orchestration, writing and usage of themes of the Hobbit score is lightyears ahead of the Warcraft score. Not to mention the orchestration of the Hobbit score is in fact objectively better than LotR's score.
And that's the thing with Warcraft. It was based on terribly bland source material and the script perfectly reflected that. There's still hope for the sequels though because atleast they have more interesting stories.

That picture was taken way out of context and even Ian McKellen himself said that it was blown out of proportion. The greenscreen incident with him crying was on his first 2 days of filming. All the remaining 700+ days of filming he was acting on real sets with real actors.
Also, he wasn't crying because he had to act on a greenscreen set (he had to do this lots of times with LOTR aswell, see pic) he was crying because he had to act alone and thought his acting wasn't good enough.
