Honestly, the bubble butt scene (even though a double) at the end really paid off for me. I knew that devil was going to get fresh meat for the fire and she was going to live deliciously.
>>
>>71566711
I wouldn't say 'enjoy' is the word for it, but it was definitely a well made movie in my opinion. The theater experience can be iffy though and ruin the entire movie for you.

When I went there were maybe 20 people and it was dead silent most of the time, especially after that scene with the crow. It took people a good minute or so to actually get out of their seats after the ending scene since they were still petrified (including myself).
>>
>>71567755

It failed to be a horror movie for me, but as an historical fiction thriller/drama type thing it was pretty good at that. I think the ending could have lost the whole flying up in the air sequence, it killed any subtly such an ending should have been for the type of movie it was.

beautiful cinematography, the atmosphere was also great, very eerie and that feeling of the unknown, and undiscovered country. The lack of music and moments of silence also helped the film immensely, as it added more to the creepiness of being isolated in the woods.

The little girl Mercy was annoying and creepy. The mom was annoying (but she even confesses she was being a "harpy"). The witch was creepy when we were looking at her naked body from behind, like a fat Gollum or something. And the religious symbolism and tones distinguished this from the typical horror films.
>>
>>71568107
>>71568006
I totally understand how people feel about the ending, but the more I thought about it I kind of liked it. You could say that it was all in their head, but scenes like the apple in the mouth, the shed being torn apart, and the witch walking around in the woods already pushed the paranormal concept out there. The ending just drove home that the evil was all real and she gave into it, not realizing her mistake till it was too late.

Why didn't the witch just kill them all at once

>>71569865

>>
Somebody redpill me on goats.

I know Templars were accused of worshipping Saracen goat heads, either through coerced confession or through incorporation of Islamic aspects into their worship; hence Baphomet, but where does the goat imagery begin?

I've heard that the term scapegoat originates from djins and demons being exorcised into goats as a safe way to contain malevolent spirits. Is that an early Abrahamic thing, or does it date back before that?
>>
>>71570635
>Why didn't the witch just kill them all at once
Why? The way they went about it was effective in totality.
>Got a nice baby sacrifice
>Got a boys virginity and possibly used him as a disease vector
>Killed the strongest adult without any trouble
>Psyop'd the mother into getting herself killed/killing Thomasin
>Got the two young, fat ones, alive, ready for the pot
>Successfully converted Thomasin, the one most primed for Witchdom
>Didn't lose or even expose a single witch.
>gg ez
>>

how did they snatch the baby even

i guess its witchcraft aka doesnt need explanation

what is a disease vector

what did they gain by eating the 2 kids

how would they even lose a witch
>>
>>71570824
Yes, but only very briefly, offscreen, at the end.
>>
>>71570965
>how did they snatch the baby even
They ran out and grabbed it. Assume that they were hiding closer than the woods themselves, possible in a dike or a bush.
>what is a disease vector
A person (or thing) who carries and transmits a disease. It's possible that the witches deliberately made Caleb ill (he was clearly sick) and sent him back to infect his family. Only reason I could fathom they'd send him back.
>what did they gain by eating the 2 kids
Witches were said to cannibals, they liked to eat people and two fat kids are typically considered delicacies for witches in similar folk tales.
>how would they even lose a witch
If they had out right massacred the family, they would have increased the likelihood of exposing their coven and in turn having a bigger, angrier and better armed force finding them.
>>
Terrible movie.
>>
>>71566711
>>>71570792
>
>how did they snatch the baby even
>i guess its witchcraft aka doesnt need explanation
They can fly. I know it's a silly image, but they could just have been hovering out of sight.
>what is a disease vector
Something through which a disease can be delivered.
>what did they gain by eating the 2 kids
Calories?
>how would they even lose a witch
Will/The Father was the biggest threat, that's why they had to sow discontent and turn him against the family. He could easily have chopped one up with his hatchet, and luring caleb out also eliminated the gun.
>>
>>71571124
>>71570792

But prior to the King Phillips subjugation of the Templar Order, what was the significance of the goat? Assuming that the accusations against the order were fabricated, why was the image of the goat head chosen to be so heinous?

Assuming that the Saracens actually provided the Templars the tradition of goat worship, why on earth were the muslims praising a false idol?

In my view, everything was food poisoning because of that black fongus on the corn.

That can give you anxiety, paranoia and hallucinations. Add that to a little cabin fever and lack of food and you got the movie.

The ending seem a little too fantastic to me. And remember that Thomasin went to sleep (die?) before talking to the black goat.

Great movie. Good atmosphere, good drama, good performances.

How the fuck is the movie open to interpretation?

I don't understand, why is it so hard for some people to accept that, in the context of the movie, the supernatural is real. We clearly saw scenes outside of the POV of the family, like when the witch stole the baby and made an ointment with it.

I'm sorry, I don't want to be rude, but I think the movie made clear that all that was happening was real.

Complete Kinography

I had walked out of Cloverfield Lane and randomly walked in to The VVitch without knowing much about it (I saw you guys talking about it and immediately closed /tv/ before anything was ruined)

I was pretty high. I was in CL with my friend and his dad and purposely wanted to get uncomfortably high with his vape before leaving to The VVitch alone.

It definitely made the experience more intense. I'm pretty sure I was hard when the witch was walking to that brother.
Great acting in general from the kids tb.h

>>
>>71576542
none, really
>>
>>71576573
Then whats the fucking point
>>
>>71576237
Only sometimes, partly because i had to keep the volume lower because they would whisper and then yell to the high heavens.

My gf is japanese, live in the states since she was young, and she could barely understand wtf they said.
>>
>>71576593
It's more of an atmosphere thriller than a horror movie, if you want jump scares, watch a slasher movie, idk

I still can't tell wheter the movie was feminist and the ending was supposed to be seen as a happy ending, or if the movie was anti-feminist and depicting liberated women as having murdered their families to dance naked around bonfires was mockery of feminists.
>>
>>71576836
get your head out of the feminism gutter loser

>feminist or anti-feminist
It was neither? there was no feminist or anti-feminist subtext, it was an old-fashioned folk tale.

feminists are so morally bankrupt and dishonest they do read stuff like this as liberating

>>
>>71576836
Probably neither. Critics have been projecting feminism on the movie because its fashionable. The plot and the dialogue were taken from folk tales. I guess you could say the original stories plots were affected by the gender structures of the colonial era but I think its a stretch to say the director's point was to make a statement on feminism. It seemed to me more of a "look how destructive it is to feel guilty about natural sin" take. There also seemed to be some Freudian mom-son dad-daughter stuff going on. All this being said, the daughter does unfairly get most of the blame and I guess you could say the average family's attitudes toward women are what drove her and others to the "liberation" of the coven.

Hey but my favorite film to come out recently, up there with Nightcrawler imo. If the movie wasn't made up entirely of literally who's there may have been some serious oscar buzz.

Some of the best kids acting in recent memory. Kid actors are usually a fucking disgrace.
>>
>>71581327
One thing the film does magnificently is it creates the 'children's world'. We're seeing things from their perspective, the children have their own society, just outside of their parents vision. Really added to the films tension and folkish charm and a lot of that is owed to the kid's acting, good on them.

I remembered having dirty thoughts about her the entire moving and feeling dirty about it because I really thought she was underage; until she got naked and my eyes bulged like my penis. Googled her age and felt so fucking relieved that I wasn't pedo.
>>
>>71574238
This. There is nothing fucking ambiguous about it. I'm baffled that some people are actually saying things like "the ending was too fantastic". What the FUCK? It's a movie about witches.

It was a really good movie, the only major issue is how it has no rewatch value, in my opinion anyway. The whole movie seems to depend on what happens next, and it's all sort of leading up to the end. Once you've seen it all, you might want to rewatch some scenes, but the whole film just isn't as interesting anymore. Feels like you're constantly waiting for the ending to happen. Maybe that's just me.

>Didst thou enjoy the vvitch

No, after the first 15-20 minutes it was boring as fuck. I haven't watched a movie so pretentious in quite a while.

If you listen closely, you can hear the director masturbating in the audio track around the 51:36 mark.

The movie was completely self-absorbed in:

The lead actress's face
Its (agonizingly) slow pace
The use of period accents and dialogue
And its own attempt to be both a horror movie, and period drama, while failing at both

The entire time I watched it I felt the director attempting to convince me how original and artsy his movie was, and I stopped caring basically as soon as the baby-moisturizer scene ended. There were two decent movies that could have been made out of The VVitch, but instead neither were made and I will never get that wasted 90 minutes back.
>>
>>71583020
Yeah but the director said that the rot that was infecting the corn was ergot. So that implies that they were all tripping.
>>
>>71583426
>self-absorbed
Cinema has to be self-absorbed.
>the lead actress's face
I don't see a problem with this.
>its agonizingly slow pace
You've never seen a slow film in your life.
>the use of period accents and dialogue
Are you serious? I thought that was one of the best things about the film. If anything, other period films should take note. That, compared with excellent production & set design and great production values all around, made it excel as both a period drama and horror movie, in my opinion.
>I felt the director attempting to convince me how original and artsy his movie was
I think you were merely imagining it.
Not once while watching this movie did I feel like it was pretending to be something more than it was. It did what it wanted to, and did it very well.

things plebs say about this movie
>it's not scary
>nothing happened
>I couldn't understand their language
>>
>>71583553
I've seen many slow films, including The Leopard. But slow films still have a pace in which things happen rhythmically, and very little happened in this movie in its own pacing. (Plus the use of period dialogue hurt the actor's performances, in my opinion, especially Thomasin's actress. It was very clunky and unnatural. People don't speak like what they wrote in journals)

But my biggest gripe is as follows: If the characters are not aware of the external threat, then where is the tension? The entire time the characters are blaming each other and monologuing about faith and God, when there is an actual god-damned non-metaphorical coven of witches out in the woods who are killing them one by one.

If it was a period movie about faith and how it can blind people, sure, it would be good. If it was a horror movie about witches in the woods and the family combats them, yeah that would be good too. But don't give me some shit that half-asses it in both directions.
