But the plane scene is objectively kino. It's so layered and deep. It's five minutes long and all of us have been studying it heavily for four years and we're still discovering new things. If that's not kino then I have no idea what is.

The opening scene of The Dark Knight Returns, sometimes known as "Bane on Plane," is generally considered to be a variant of surrealism or Dadaism, usually with existential or postmodern undertones related to collapse of meaning and the visceral absurdity of confusion in a symbolic order. On this reading, the scene is designed to evoke a kind of uncanny valley effect in the viewer by presenting him with what is ostensibly an incredibly conventional narrative and semiotic holism - an American action caper, constructed so prototypically from cliches and familiar devices that even the exciting "reveal" of Bane's identity has its anagnorisis and payoff botched well before its presentation as dramatic climax - but subtly and systemically undermining the possibility of semiotic stability throughout the scene, and thereby sabotaging the possibility of the viewer's fusion with the film's semiotic horizon. The experience of watching Bane on Plane is one of profound unease and even dissociation, as the viewer continually tries to assemble coherent meanings, motives, and purposes from a train of malformed tropes, allegories, and metaphors; narratological intuition continually fails to discover any implicit humanity in the behaviour of the actors. The mind reflexively brackets the scene as likely to admit of little variation in its seemingly familiar, even monolithic tropes, but is continually surprised to find that near every trope is "misbehaving." Where at first a single puzzle piece does not "fit" with its puzzle, it is quickly realised that none of the pieces fit; and that this, perhaps, is not a puzzle at all. When asked whether the work of Foucault and Deleuze on the epistemic experience of schizophrenia influenced his choices in his role as Bane, Tom Hardy declined to comment, but referenced Foucault on the discursive constitution of the author-function.

I don't think this has been mentioned before, so I figured I'd give my two cents on it.
The plane scene has several instances of synecdoche in it, and I think synecdoche has a key role in the messages the scene conveys.
The first line spoken in the film is a synecdoche - "I'm CIA." This is pretty interesting because CIA himself is limiting his identity to the organisation he works for. We can assume this is because his morals and values line up with those of the CIA: CIA's association with his organisation is so strong that it's become the dominant feature of his personality. We could imagine CIA to be the sort of person to have neglected his personal life in working for The Agency, so much so that he'd probably have very little going for him if he didn't have his job.
The line, "Lotta loyalty for a hired gun!" is a clear example of synechdoche, describing Bane's henchmen as nothing more than their weapons - disposbale pawns in Bane's plan.
When Bane says, "Nobody cared who I was 'til I put on the mask," he's referring to his new villainous persona, so simplifying his change in character to putting on his mask is another instance of synecdoche.
"Have we started the fire?"
The brother is asking if the seeds of anarchy and destruction have been planted rather than a literal fire starting, although fires will be involved.
When Pavel's referred to as "Your prize," Masquitto is referring to Dr Pavel as well as the prize CIA would get from retrieving the doctor.
I tried to keep this post brief, but I'd be interested in what you guys have to say about this.

The amount of influence that the plane scene has had is staggering. Here we can see that it has even spread to other cultures. It is universal kino.
Now I'm really in the mood to rewatch this movie again. Mostly because of the opening

Looking at this thread, seeing how much of my OC is being circulated, I feel complete.
I've contributed to this meme more than I realised at the time.
Who the fuck was the random furry OC "Bat Man" in the post-credits scene? Where was CIA? Why was Bane fighting this random OC?

"They expect juan ohvus in the wreckage brother"
Who is juan ovhus? Is that banes real name? Did bane (juan ovhus) transfer his own blood into his brother so they would think the body was banes (juan ovhus)?
>>71568147
He has his stand ć4Uć, which makes him bigger than his opponent. But he has to declare it by saying his stand's name. If he declares it to the universe, he becomes bigger than the universe. Bane, essentially, is the first one to tap into the power of spiral energy. That's why we can see CIA trying to gain that power in Westeros in orderd to confront Bane on Earth. He ultimately achievs this, but we can see his demise during the opening of the first episode of Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann. But CIA's legacy lives on, with the spiral key, that was picked up by Simon.

Juan Ovus us the one who stayed behind the plane crash

>>71566061
Capped
That moment when he says Bane... There's something about it.
It's a violent clash of emotions, all fighting to show up on the surface. One word. This one word has so many feelings attached to it. CIA had probably heard legends about Bane's size. Maybe he thought that Bane was fiction. Maybe he believed and was happy to finally know more about him. Or perhaps he was sad. Probably confused as well. Can you imagine experiencing so much at once?
How long was the scene? Like 2 seconds? And yet, it captured a large portion of the spectrum of emotions that we humans feel. THIS, my friends, is the real deal. THIS is KINO.
