Go ahead and prove me wrong, Heat is fantastic.

>>71549701
Go watch it, now!

I wish I could take a screwdriver and gouge out the eyes of people who actually praise Michael Mann.

Heat's a good film, but it's not "near-perfect". it's only middling in Mann's filmography.

Not "nearly perfect" though, this is a 10/10 and I can't think of anything it could have done better.
>>
>>71549752
what is the order I should watch Mann?
>>
>>71549608
Michael Mann has never made a less than perfect film.
>>
>>71549712
Still surprising that Brett Ratner somehow made a better Red Dragon than Mann did.

No films are perfect.
>>
>>71549790
the essentials:
>Thief
>Manhunter
>Heat
>Collateral
>Miami Vice

all of his films are good (except for The Keep, but that's the studio's fault). those 5 are just the best way to look at his career in a nutshell. afterwards i highly recommend checking out Ali and The Insider; they're both absolutely fantastic, but don't really mesh well with the rest of his filmography on first viewing.

The ending was stupid

The Keep is as good as his other films made around that time.

but he didn't

the keep is better, he kinda compromised in the heat, the keep is just this perfectly ambient journey into darkness, it's arguably he's 10/10 movie
>>
Heat is a Pacino/De Niro snoozefest, Thief is still his best and utmost perfect.

>excellent cast
>great acting
>fantastic cinematography
>great character arcs
>inspiring
>realism
>one of the greatest action scenes put to screen in film history
>great ending
>holds up very well

I love most of Mann's stuff, but this is a masterpiece and I think you should rewatch it. Thief is awesome aswel.

What are you smoking? His early work is good but doesn't hold a candle to his late career.
>>
>>71549890
one of the best openings of all time, too bad the movie kinda takes a dive at some point

>>71549896
you shut your mouth, The Keep is 10/10

>The Keep
Very underrated, but I think it lacks substance. It's a very ambitious movie, but aside from that it doesn't offer a lot, unlike Heat.
>>
>>71549869
sure. it's not a "bad" film. but it's got crippling issues that no other film he's touched have. the atmosphere is absolutely impeccable.

>>71549895
it's Mann's best conventional film. his more experimental stuff is far more compelling.
>>
>>71549937
>takes a dive at some point
maybe the last few scenes where he killed the guys instead of just running- but even they were well shot
>>
>>71549871
>"Break on Through" starts playing for some reason
>William Peterson hamming up every attempt at drama
>>
>>71549775
the Specail effects in the end look dated, could use a make over in a decade or two when the technology is better, otherwise we will get another star wars special edition.
