its old and black and white, dont question it. they were just playing around with cameras at this point in time figuring out what to do, and this movie got popular because death was scary. It was in the late 60s that movies started to actually be something we would consider films today. So anything before 60s, or films that are in black and white, are mostly just hour long youtube videos. Some guy knew some funny trick so they made a movie out of it. Theres a reasons why these films are filled with strange dance numbers and scenes where the characters break out into song.
my guess is Death is a personification of Death but the God he is looking for is a personification of happy life forever

I wrote a big thing but mods banned me. Basically death is neither god or satan. This crusader has seen death since he left home, and now that the actual figure has arrived he wishes to see God.
His faith confused and it's putting the impression that his crusade was not for god, because there is no God or satan, only Death.
That's what I think.
