Going to have to agree with OP. I saw it when it was released on DVD, like around 2001 or so and I was let down. I'll have to revisit it when the new BD comes out to see if I can share the rest of this board's enthusiasm for it.

Still doesn't change the fact that it's shit

You're gonna have to sleep sometime, OP.

Your taste, yes.

A good movie makes you care about the characters. The Thing doesn't.

Schindler's List was a shitty movie then.

How doesn't the movie make you care? You don't need 10 minute emotional monologues to convey character and make the audience care.
If the movie relied on expository dialogue to make characters more fleshed out it would miss the fucking point. The point is you are dropped in with a bunch of strangers, and the audience is just as suspicious as the characters are of each other. If the characters were more fleshed out it would make it painfully obvious who lives and who dies, who is unimportant and those who are vital to the plot. That's the strength of the film. You feel the same way as the characters, and you share their paranoia.

The Carpenter version is pretty faithful to the novella.

I'm halfway through it now and I'm having trouble caring about any of the characters. Still good scifi horror but not on par with alien for me
