It's pretty easy to be a bad stand-up comedian, which is 99.97% of stand-up comedians. To get well-known, you have to have a really good hook and some solid content to back it up

you kind of just start doing it by going to open mics. some started out in the improv side first or concurrently, depends on what you want to do in stand up.

you could easily spend 10 years doing it and not really go anywhere with it, just like anything else thats entertainment (movies, music, etc.) you not only have to be 'good' but you gotta be at the right place / right time aka gotta be lucky (if you don't have connections).

start by going to see some big comedians, then gradually work your way down to seeing smaller comedians at your local venues. by then you should have an idea of what sort of routine will work for you. then start attempting to get a slot at those local venues. from then on, you just got to think about working your way back up, as a performer this time.
