I didn't know how I felt about it when I first saw it but it stuck with me for a few days. Really want to see it again.
Can't wait for there to be a torrent of it so the rest of /tv/ watches it and begins posting about it similar to Green Room threads that have popped up the past couple days.

Visually, it was amazing. The soundtrack also nailed it with the style of the movie. The plot didn't really grab me though. Overall, not half bad

Incredible. First time I went it was only me, my girl, and a single old man a row down from us. Saw it again last night and it was just my girlfriend and her friend and her boyfriend. Her friend loved it but I could tell her boyfriend had no idea what the fuck happened. 10/10 score and I'd love to jerk off to the shower scene but I'd also feel very wrong about myself, that shit felt very satanic for some reason. Anyone know what to make of the occult undertones the film seemingly had?

I liked it a whole lot, and I'm only feeling better about it as it sits with me. Beyond the obvious visual and music praise,
I thought the plot was plenty present and captivating, and the acting was find. I actually found the script quite realistic at times. There was a thread last night about nightcore films, and Neon Demon really did a fantastic job of capturing that brooding yet comfy feel, sort of like Eyes Wide Shut. The ending really wasn't that out of no where, if you were paying attention it was all laid out. I really liked the Elle death scene. While it wasn't incredibly deep, there was some nice and well executed symbolism, ultimately a really cool film to watch

That Bond-esque action film set in Tokyo, written by Schrader and directed by Refn would be perfect for Reeves. It's supposed to complete the loose trilogy of Valhalla Rising and Drive.

>>
Elle Fanning is the most attractive girl in Holywood.
>>
>>71484264
I never thought so until I saw this movie
>>
Seeing Keanu playing this huge asshole was really hilarious to me for some reason. Def kind of a meme character, in a good way.

It was trippy seeing him acting without the Keanu voice for the first time too.
>>
I just saw it in the theatre. Did I like it?
>>
>>71484264
I've argued for a while that Elle is the most aesthetic girl right now, the muse. She's been the girl that art world people and high fashion people and those who admire style usually appreciate.

It is really fitting, and a great use of this opportunity, to have her star in what is like the ultimate a e s t h e t i c film, that focuses on her ineffable 'thing' and the kind of radiant quality and pull it has, and how people with such ineffable gifts (the 'thing') draw so much hate and obsession.

And I mean for all the point-missing critics who say this is style over substance (as if style isn't everything, as if causality isn't aesthetic)... it totally defines this era of image but also objects, of aura and aesthetics and the internet and waifuism and post-internet, post-media occultism.
>>
I laughed at Keanu's hard candy line.
>>
What were people's thoughts on Jenna Malone? I thought she stole the show personally.
>>
>>71487710
Good post.
>>
>>71488573
She was good. I felt everyone was perfectly cast. The fashion photographer guy. And that fashion director who said "beauty is the only thing". His response when Elle did her walk was perfect and hilarious.
>>
In all seriousness, has there ever been a more waifu film than this?

I don't mean simply involving attractive starlets, but being more specifically about their absurd magnetism and power. I mean there's Lolita, but this was more about the whole waifu industry around them.

It's literally the Waifu Movie
>>
>>71481185
7 Mil is fucking nothing anyway, it was an art project and "art" or not the producers didn't go for a huge box office hit obviously

7 Million loss is nothing worth shedding a tear over, that's practically a film for free for such a big contemporary director and a few a listers
>>
>>71488767
Yeah, and it will easily eventually earn that money back, and will become a cult classic, and everyone who was involved will be thankful to have been a part of it.
>>
>>71481349
How hard refn tried to sell the audience in her beauty was cringeworthy, she looks really average, all the other girls had something otherworldly and alien, in my opinion much better than the pale girl from the neighbourhood
>>
>>71482095
Holy fuck that was so hot, the "rape" scene was a real let down because Elle didn't give in to Jesse.
Holy fuck I popped boners left and right there
>>
>>71480603
Just found that I can stream the soundtrack. Listening to the seizure-inducing dance track right now, shit is fucking hype.

I was actually freaked out by pretty much everything past her meeting what I like to think of as the actual Neon Demon, the red Triforce. Shit got real cannibalistic/necrophiliac real quick.
>>
>>71488811
I think - and they seemed not to want to say this too directly - was that she had that virginal youthful beauty that the fashion industry desires and wants to exploit, and sells the best.

She may not be the most beautiful girl, exactly, but she does have a graceful, aesthetic quality that appeals to the more high fashion crowd (and gets her in a lot of shoots and good dresses), and she does have that eternal youth thing that it all really comes down to.

I assure you, all these 'hotter' 20-something looking models really would rather look like her. Which was kind of Refn's point, and he's stated it in interviews for the film - that there is that obsession with youthful image, and it's getting younger.
>>
Should have been called Semon Demon.

I don't know if "fashion" wants this kind of gal but to me she seemed rather boring and average, I'm completely honest, never understood the people who are so into her

Isabelle Adjani for example I'd understand, she has this pure innocent look, and I think, at least I read, that Refn tried to go for the Giallo style and I think Adjani would've fit in perfectly in one of those trashy Italian thrillers

Madonnas daughter for example, is someone I personally think is really beautiful, but I know she wouldn't fit this movie at all.

Saw it in a sneak preview. Some people left during the movie. Same happened at cannes. I seriously can relate with those people. Here is my humble opinion:
Good soundtrack
Nice visuals
Non existant dialog
Very tedious at times
90 minutes of nothing followed by 20 minutes of total provocation with tabu topics
2/10 stay the fuck away from it. Seriously everyone who says the film is superb is just hungry for that drive director. Drive was a good movie this is not.

If you are not into pretentious art flicks just for the sake of it there is no entertainment value whatsoever.

I saw it a couple days ago. It's in my top 5 of the year and will probably stay there because I liked it that much. Just a fun campy thriller with beautiful and dangerous girls, Cliff Martinez at his best, a lot of brilliant design and stylistic choices (her first runway walk), a GREAT ending. If the male characters were a bit better developed, it would be my MOTY. As it stands, it's a worthy successor to Black Swan. Lipstick lesbian thrillers are my favorite.

And surprisingly: No one walked out! It was fairly crowded too. Is the public learning to appreciate Refn?

Neon Demon is a sophomoric film on paper but the execution is incredibly vexing. Basically, like all things under the "vulgar auteuer" umbrella: execution is paramount. Neon Demon nailed it. Only God Forgives nailed it. Blackhat nailed it. Pain & Gain nailed it.

I didn't know who she was, my friend just kept saying she was an "actress," and actresses are always fucking crazy, or annoying, or needy, so I wasn't super enthused, but my friend showed me Donnie Darko, and I was eventually like, oh okay, she's cute, okay, cool, fine.

So, I go out on a date with Jena, I pick her up she seemed excited for the date. We went to see a movie, and I let her pick, and she picked Religilous, which I've since seen again, paying more attention than this first time.
Anyways, so, ten minutes into the movie, she lightly guides my face by the chin to hers, and starts violently kissing me.
I was okay with it, of course, but she tasted almost exactly like these sort of smokehouse almonds that my grandparents would always have at their house, and these almonds tasted like mashed up cigarettes.
I wasn't a smoker, at the time, I am now, but back then I found the taste really gross, but I didn't stop kissing her, and she eventually started grabbing my cock in the theater.
She wasn't actually like rubbing it or massaging it through my pants, or anything, she was sort of clawing at it weakly, like she really wanted to grab it but was afraid it hurt her (or me, maybe?) anyways, she then reaches her hand down my pants, and again, instead of actually jerking me off, or whatever, she grips my cock, and puts her thumb over the hole.
Then she started moving her thumb in a circle, like my dick was like a joystick or something.
IT didn't feel bad, but it wasn't entirely pleasant.
Anyways, we do this off an on throughout the whole moving, and at one point she leaned over and whispered in my ear "I think I'm on my period, but there wasn't any blood when I checked"
I think she was intended to entice me into finger her (which I did, later, out in my car in the parking lot) but it didn't really work.

Anyways, I took her home a few hours later

If the Austin anon from the thread this morning is here, sorry I didnt respond, by the time I saw your invite the thread was archived.

But nah, I can't make it out this weekend. That's the whole problem. Thanks for the invite though. Very nice of you.

Anyway, when is this shit gonna leak? I cant be assed to drive the length of the movie to see it, and then drive back. fuck that

lmao where the fuck do you niggers live that you don't have it playing within a 20 mile radius of you?
It was playing at 7 theaters near me until tonight, at fucking Regal and AMC of all places
It's getting pulled from most of them tomorrow but there's still a couple that are holding onto it for at least another week so I might watch it again tomorrow night or over the weekend
>>
>>71497424
Goddamnit.

Maybe I will drive to Austin for it.

It was gone before I knew it

I wouldn't say there's much Fellini influence.

The film really has its own style, and it's very contemporary. All create projects construct themselves from former influences, but good art then transmutes it into something fresh and new. This accomplished this. It's more than the pastiche of, say, Tarantino.

That said, Refn has basically exactly the same film canon I have, so I can spot exactly what influences are down in there.

They are:
>Beyond the Valley of the Dolls (naive beauty comes to LA, gets corrupted as she gets popular, final bloody climax in a mansion)
>Carrie (blonde outsider girl gets fucked by the haters, gets betrayed when she's finally on top of the world)
>Mulholland Dr. (LA will eat you alive, the whole mise en scene and atmosphere)
>The Hunger (the gauziness, obsession with eternal youthfulness, 'vampiric' theme)
>Body Double (dreamy, delirious Los Angeles, the house-sitting a mansion)
>Suspiria (color-overload, beauty and gore, vibes)
>Under the Skin (the complicated, fraught, predatory dynamics of feminine beauty)
>Gaspar Noe's recent work - namely, Enter the Void and Love (the particular new 'neon' cinematography)
>Don't Look Now (the premonitions and sacrifice, bloody symbolism)
>The Holy Mountain (the Hermetic/alchemical structure and symbolism)
>Lucifer Rising (the panning, 'vignette' approach to constructing scenes, flashing occultic use of images, images as magic)
>>
>>71493897
There's an exoteric use of it and an esoteric. Refn is a protoge of Jodorowsky, who treats his work as an esoteric art. I don't believe in explicating such ideas, but if you study and put in hard work and pain you'll maybe someday be able to seek out what that stuff is about.

>>71489629
For some reason some asshole took down the youtube Neon Demon mixtape playlist. (the mix of songs Refn had the cast and crew listen to a lot to get into the right headspace).

The songs on the mixtape were:

“So I Cried,” The Myrmidons

“Radio-Activity,” Kraftwerk

“Bubble Sex,” Tommy Seebach

“Cheree,” Suicide

“Drone Logic,” Daniel Avery

“Fade To Grey,” Visage

“Knights In White Satin,” Giorgio Moroder

“Superwoman,” Madison

“Fyt,” This Mortal Coil

“(Theme From) Valley Of The Dolls,” Dionne Warwick

“An Ending,” Brian Eno

“Bela Lugosi’s Dead,” Bauhaus

“Magic Fly,” Space

“The Number One Song In Heaven,” Sparks

“Won’t Somebody Dance With Me,” Lynsey De Paul

“My Elusive Dreams,” Tammy Wynette And George Jones

“Savage Love,” Death In Vegas

“Pop Pop Shoo Wah,” Erotic Drum Band

“Coum,” Death In Vegas

“Boy,” Book Of Love

Anyone else going to see this multiple times?

I feel it won't be the same on a smaller screen, and given the poor attendance, it will be some time before there are screenings after it attains cult status.
>>
>>71497309

I saw it three times and I was the only one in the theater each time, well before the cucks left today. people were lined up out the door to see fucking Independence Day: Regurgitation. literally employees were going through the line asking if anyone was planning on seeing something other than ID42 and I was like yep, this guy! got served before the herd of retarded cows. of course, they all mocked me. The Neon Demon!? that sounds stoopid lol!

I asked one of the employees, who sat in with me one of the times, and she said they wanted to use the extra screen for Tarzan instead. I was so pissed. On my way out I took a giant shit in the bathroom and didn't flush.

It's ugly in a way I never thought possible.

It will kill the career of Jena Malone. Literally destroy it. She'll never work in anything good again.

This movie will hurt any recognizable actor in the film.

Of course the most important question you have to ask, is why would anyone want to write and film something like this? It's not a traditional horror movie.

Rather it celebrates and revels in it's own depravity. It's a morally bankrupt film, that should be considered in the same vein of work as films like Salo and Cannibal Holocaust. It's depravity for the sake of depravity.

>stay the fuck away from it
Fuck off. And Drive was only decent, especially in comparison to Valhalla Rising or the Pusher Trilogy. Saying its Refns best is not a good look
>>
>>71491674
Ah, that's too bad. I thought the plot was neat, script was fine too. Some really nice giallo callbacks, and an interesting perspective of the fashion industry, one that glamorizes it as much as critiques it. I'm not claiming it was super deep, but the symbolism was there, and the build up just worked for me. The ending, while "shocking", wasn't out of character for the film; it made sense to me
>>
>>71492967
This. It's fun, sexy, a cool look at the shallowness of not only the fashion industry, but of natural human beauty, and a beautifully executed film. It wasn't meant to be anything more, nor does it have to be

When you watched this movie did you even realize that Ruby was a "300 year old witch" who killed young women in a ritualistic manner to absorb their energy and replenish their youth?

Because that's what was going on.
>>
>>71505372

What are you even talking about?
>>
>>71505404

In an interview, Jenna Malone said ruby was 300 years old and had killed like 80 other girls with the same ritual to absorb their youth.
>>
>>71505481
I always wondered if she planned to do it from the start, or only decided to when she got rejected. Sort of makes more sense if you see it as planned out.
>>71505306
Mind recommending some other films that critique AND glamorize shallowness, as well as unhealthy craving for natural virgin beauty on both an industrial and personal level?
>>
>>71505646

First, this film doesn't glamorize this lifestyle at all. It's the most scathing indictment of this world I've seen in a very long time.

Second, the whole idea of the "ugliness of the beautiful people" is at the heart of literally every movie and TV show about modeling produced in the past 40 years. It's a very common, and sadly, very played out theme.

I think that's why Refn went for the shock value, because this story has been done so many times he had to do something new with it.

>I always wondered if she planned to do it from the start

I definitely think she planned to do it from the start. Like a predator staling prey.

I will never forget that scene of her laying in the grave.
>>
>>71505727
>that scene of her laying in the grave

yeah, what was that about? Part of the ritual?
>>
>>71505913
God that was disturbing. I think she just wanted to be close to her one more time before she finished burying the body.
>>
So is the film supposed to be as funny as it was, or is it a case of Refn being autistic like with all the funny moments in Drive?
>>
What the fuck was Ruby doing the last time we saw her? The lighting in the film was too dark for me to tell if she was pissing blood or if whatever fluid was black or something
>>
>>71506684

Refn said it was menstrual blood in an interview. Some people think she it was Jesse's blood, and she somehow inserted it inside of herself, by using an enema or douche.

But it's supposed to be menstrual blood according to Refn.

Off the top of my head, Drive and Only God Forgives. I was hyped for this movie because I have a weak spot for 80's style neon colors in film. Visuals are growing to be my favorite aspect of film though I haven't seen many of the greatest visual films.

I can say that many of the shots were to close and lacked depth to some degree. I like large scale wide shots which were few and far between in Neon Demon. I can think of some scenes that looked neat and others that were almost a headache (the bathroom scene at the party was frustrating).

The Driver is more about the characters than the action. Still it's very well shot.

I wish Jesse's transformation had been a little less abrupt.

She gets one good gig and goes from "Gee whiz I'm so shy and innocent" to "I'm the most beautiful woman in the world suck my dick" in like a scene and a half.

I know they were dropping hints that the innocent little doe thing was an act ("I'm not as helpless as I look"), but I think it would have been more interesting to see her slowly let the mask slip rather than just dropping the act all at once.
