Adele is low-middle class and Emma is high class (refined and related with arts, basically a hispster with money and blue blood). Later you can see that Emma know people from high society and Adele is just a teacher.
Dunno how it is in your country, but the same with food. Pasta (Adele is always eating or cooking) is considered food for poor people and the lazy here. Eating street food was considered poor taste or for single man only until recently.

It's more a background thing, in my opinion.
