While it has been an obvious twist for years, R+L=J is arguably *the* fan theory that all of the fans have been waiting for to be unveiled, and one of the most central plot points in his saga.
He hasn't mentioned anything about Game of thrones on his blog, and he usually does every once in a while, especially when it's a big episode like the first in the season or the season finale.
He can wipe his tears with his millions.
He will never finish the books.

I don't think he's going to finish the books. Why finish them when everybody already know the ending? Also, sales will probably diminish greatly because of the same reason, because by the time the last book is out, it will have been 5-10 years after the show ended, and interest is gone.
I don't know the terms of his agreement with HBO, but I imagine that if he wanted to badly enough he could have forced an alternate canon in the show fully or held the show hostage until the books caught up.
I think that he's glad to be relevant and half-counting on the distinct possibility that the show will tell the basics of his story properly when his slow writing pace is inevitably outstripped by his death.

The maester thing isn't really a plot itself. It's just a way to establish that Marwyn is fucking intense and he's going to be a weird arcane influence on Daenerys, who is, in the middle of her "fire and blood" phase, going to be susceptible to a lot of dangerous ideas. Like her being the Lord of Light's champion or the stallion that mounts the world might make her justify some fucked up actions, Marwyn might help to convince her to meet Westeros with violence.
And Quentyn's journey is just a good story. Interesting in and of itself, sets off overarching plot points, gives us a view into dramatic, otherwise inaccessible parts of the world.

Jon Snow isn't Ned Stark's bastard. He is the son of her sister, who was to marry Robert Baratheon, but was kidnapped by Rhaegar Targaryen (now revealed to be Jon's father) and died in bed after birthing Jon. We knew about the kidnapping, but we didn't know about the baby or that it was Jon.
This is very huge, as Jon's whole character is based around how he is a bastard, and his existence is a paradox in Ned's character as he's the most honorable man in Westeros. The Targaryens are also extinct beyond Danaerys, so Jon's existence as a Targ is also huge.

It must be hard to motivate yourself to write when you know that it's not through your work that the audience will get to experience and learn of the plot. Sure, he can write things better and make the journey to the conclusion more enjoyable, but he'll always know that his audience already knows where it leads, so he can no longer write under the assumption that people don't know where it's going. To know that when he's writing the "Hold the door"-chapter he knows that no one is surprised.
Feel bad for him, even though he signed on to this and probably should have known that he wouldn't finish it before the books caught up with him.
It's actually kind of good for him that the show is really bad in some places, since it will lead to more interest in wanting to see the "true" version of it play out.
