None of its perfect but GoTs problems used to be that of budgetary restraints more than terrible writing so its flaws were more forgivable.
Season 4 was the last good one, had some stellar moments and a really strong ending but it also had cringy shit like the littlefinger moondoor scene creeping in. Badly written exposition to hold the hands of plebs.
5 and 6 are both universally pretty horrible with only one or two moments between them as highlights.
5 is painful for the extended Dorne subplot, 6 is just lazy fan service. Can't really even tell which I hate more.

Sure, S5 had the character assassination of Stannis Baratheon but in 6 we have Jon and Daenerys Mary Sue status increased ten fold. Season 1 was amazing for the rewatch, but the first time you actually see it, it's not all that great because they did a shit jobs of explaining the backstory.
Season 5 is a sin against God.
I think they're better when following the books and still pretty great going their own way, but they were absolutely terrible in season 5 when they tried to use hamburger helper to stretch what little was left of the books into a full season.

I was terrified that season 6 was just going to be them stitching together the plot points they missed like the Kings Moot and the Battle of Meereen
6 vs 2 is the hardest placement.
Blackwater renders the other nine mundane episodes of 2 redundant and is perhaps the peak of the show.
About half of season 6 is great (Eps 4-7, 9 and 10) but elsewhere dialogue, pacing and lack of consistency are worse than ever before and features what is debatably the series' worst episode (No One).

Before this season I skimmed through episodes from seasons 1-4 and it is amazing how much the show has dropped in quality. Its like watching two totally different shows. The first sign of the dangerous stupidity of the showrunners and the hackery to come was the spooky skeletons and fireballs in the end of season 4. I know now that was the beginning of the end.
On the other hand, I have been extremely appreciative of Game of Thrones for the past 2 years. I can easily decide based on someone's opinion of the show whether they are worth listening to or not.

My normie brothers say the same thing. In a way I think a big portion of those watching don't actually follow the plot or the characters and are actually heavily invested. Instead they got told to watch the show because it got popular, so they must watch it because it's a popular thing you gotta watch. So they are then half interested and just watching it to watch, not appreciating the character moments and slow buildups, instead only taking away the conclusion that the plot is slow. So once the plot starts speeding up at the cost of careful buildup, pacing and character motivation, they don't care, because they're just glad that they can watch the spectacle now.
I'd bet most of them don't even understood what Robert's rebellion or the backstory was about from season 1, something that's almost vital to understand to enjoy the early portions of the show. The fact that we're jumping in in median res, with grumpy old rulers/war criminals who have victory on their side, allowing them to land on the right side of history. Having some off-show knowledge and reading some parts of the first book makes it better, and I don't think most people had that when they first watched it.

What strikes me is how deep in lore it is. We are constantly told of past wars, past people, stories, gods, past encounters with people. It's a joy to just live in the world, to see what more we'll find out next. I feel almost nothing of that in the show now, it's all just very to the point and moving the plot forward, Dorne being the worst offender of this. I mean do we know ANYTHING of what makes Dorne what it is? Culture? Attitude? How do the cities look? We know jack shit. All we've seen is that garden, that ridiculous coup where no one reacts, and then BAM we have the Martell fleet show up after a 1minute scene with Lady Olenna and Varys. Yet somehow they have time to put in filler Tyrion comic relief scenes where they do nothing. They didn't pace it out evenly enough, and now they're just trying to race to the finish line, when we could have had several seasons of great built up characters finally interacting with each other in Westeros.
