It was one of the most important parts of the movie. The second time he gives the speech is the definitive proof that "his world" is being fucked with by the ayyspiders. When you pair it with the source the book is based on, it's impossible not to make the connection.
The spiders are a stand-in, but in the context of the movie, they're what they appear to be.
