He saw him kill his parents and he was a witness to the crime. Why was he kept alive?

he didn't want to kill Bruce's parents, he wanted to rob him, but both Bruce's father and mother attacked him.

after he killed them you could see he had a look of horror on his face and he ran away.

the scene was all the more tragic because of it.
