After this he became paranoid and it all went downhill from there. Aerys had began exhibiting odd behavior even before, mostly jealousy fueled by Tywin's excellent work as Hand of the King.
To prove himself to his subjects, he intended to solve the dispute with his unruly vassals on his own. It failed, he got captured, and the rest is history.
