The Night King has to wait for Bran to go South before he can get past the wall's magic.
They can't go South of the Wall because the Wall is magically enchanted and blocks their passage. The show hasn't done a very good job of explaining this as the first we've heard of the wall being magical was the last episode and they've skipped over any previous descriptions of it being otherworldlyin the books the secret gate Sam passes through with Gilly is magically sealed shut and only opens if a member of the Nights Watch recites an older version of their oath to it. There's also a subplot in the books that involves people hunting for a magic horn that when used would cause the Wall to collapse that was excised from the show.
