Yep. The "Picard with PTSD" stuff was so out of character and cringey.

Truth be told that was the failing of pretty much all the TNG films, none of them really captured the characters of the show. Data and Picard especially.
>>
First Trek I ever saw and I was blown away. The Cochrane stuff helped me understand the appeal of Star Trek, and Picard's plot was intense and didn't upset me because I knew nothing about his character before watching the film.

I like the Next Gen TV series but all of the Next Gen movies are bad. The cast just didn't have the chemistry to pull it off on the big screen. The plots in the movies are terrible, especially the one with the Borg Queen.
>>

The movies are fine if you watch them at home pretending they are a two-parter (except for Nemesis, fuck that noise). The movies were not so great in theaters. TUC was the last good Trek movie.

Because the Borg want to "farm" humanity to its greatest potential. Everytime they send a Borg cube to Earth, humans get inventive and pull tricks that the Collective wouldn't have thought of. They're slowly but surely grooming humans into becoming perfect assimilation material.

Look at how Voyager developed that nanoprobe torpedo to defeat Species 8472. Even with the vast resources and knowledge that the Collective had, the Borg lack creativity and innovation to do something like that. They adapt, but that's more of an automatic response than an actual coherent thought.

Third best Trek film behind Khan and Voyage Home (The three of which combined suffice to prove the historic Even-Numbered rule), First Contact revisits the Moby Dick imagery of the former, as well as the time traveling device of the latter, albeit with a significantly different antagonist and plot.

Also cool to see is the titular event itself, at the film's end. Lucky that we (they) met the Vulcans first, and they (the Vulcans) didn't think too ill of us.

Well Cochran was a money-grabbing asshole, but he was still a visionary at heart and had given up hope for life as a drunk, and the away team helping him rebuild and get the Phoenix into space returned his confidence. So did the Holodeck replicate a working tommy gun for Picard, or is it simply a wireframe model and the Borg are being ripped apart by the force field generators on the walls?

Because if it's the former, just replicate some more god damn tommy guns.

>>
>>71373246
Doesn't alter what he says in Nemesis. FFS is this your first retcon you autistic fuck?
>>
>>71374169
I didn't care about the go-carting or how insanely-maxed the Scimitar was. A ship with a perfect cloak that can't be defected AND with planet-killing capabilities? I have a theory that the Scimitar was originally a salvaged Dominion ship that Shinzon utilized for his personal use.

What I liked about Nemesis was a proper conflict with the Romulans since we never got to see them in battle compared to the Klingons, the Borg, or the Dominion. It pisses me off that Enterprise didn't do the Earth-Romulan War.

Quite frankly, out of all the Trek factions and races, the Romulans fascinate me the most because they're a Roman-esque power within the trappings of a Vulcan offshoot. They fully embrace emotions, are sneaky bastards, and I really like the post-supernova fallout that Star Trek Online and the novels address.

People can have lapses. It was a massively traumatic event that Picard experienced. Not only does he suffer PTSD, it was mental and biological violation. The core of his essence as an individual was robbed by the Borg and what's worse is that he was responsible for the deaths at Wolf 359.

I really liked the tense scene between Sisko and Picard in DS9's pilot. Really goes to show you how fellow Fed officers held a grudge against Picard for contributing to the Borg annihilation of that task force.

The fact that ANOTHER Borg cube was heading to Earth and causing more casualties ala Wolf 359 made Picard snap again. He had a relapse because the guilt caught up and he was reliving the horrors of being Locutus.
>>
>>71372436

Tommy guns would damage the hull and windows, I imagine, causing hull breaches.
>>
>>71372473
Which is why Picard went gonzo-blitzkrieg with it. He knew that he had a limited time to wipe out those Borg drones before they adapted.
>>
>>71374654
I get ytmnd flashbacks more than anything. It it's one of my favorite scenes in the movie, though. the way he starts screaming is brilliant. I like to think that Picard is getting a rush from the power and spectacle of a tommy gun compared to a phaser.

Yeah, I guess so.

Sisko was out of line in that scene. It had the tone of black entitlement to demonstrate anger at the white man and separate himself from white authority. Picard wasn't responsible for Locutus the same way a random white person is not responsible for slavery. He has no reason to feel guilty. Humiliated, tortured, violated, but not guilty.

>So… my brother is human being after all.

Picard's brother was angry at him for being so perfect, always getting the highest praise and then leaving the family behind. Worse, he was annoyed that Picard seemed to buy into his own excellence and it fueled his ambition. In "Family" Picard was brought back down to Earth, literally. He made that speech while covered in mud. He had his pride hurt, not his conscience.

Now think back to the Moby Dick metaphor in First Contact. In Moby Dick Captain Ahab is on a quest to avenge the whale that hurt his pride. Would Moby Dick make sense as a novel if the whale hurt Ahab's conscience and made him feel guilty? No! It doesn't make sense for the Borg either.

Star Trek pleb here. I have not seen any of the films or series. I know almost nothing about it except the general knowledge stuff, but I'm interested in watching some comfy 70s scifi.

Is there a problem with watching the feature films without having knowledge from the series and still enjoy it? Also, which films are best/ in what order should I watch them? Which should I avoid?
>>
>>71396719
>his dead nephew, a character I'd never seen.
You never watched Family, fammy?
>>
>>71396989
TOS is dated, but the first two seasons are still really good.

The first movie is love it or hate it because its slow as fuck.

Star Trek II is nice and actiony, and probably the most recognizable pop culture ST movie.

ST3 is "ehhhh"

ST4 is weird but very good.

ST5 sucks

ST6 is very good and sets up the politics of the future of the series in regards to Klingons.

Star Trek: The Next Generation is really good. The first season has a lot of painful moments and Wesley is the most annoying character ever, but the series settles into a great groove pretty quick.

The TNG movies are all out of character trash.

DS9 is great pretty much the whole way through.

Star Trek Voyager sucks ungodly amounts of ass with the rare exception of episodes set around the Doctor or 'Year of Hell'.

I think Star Trek: Enterprise is actually super comfy and you get to watch George W. Bush have adventures in space. Also when T'pol switches from her brown clothes into her blue or red outfits, it's max fanservice done right. I'm kinda in the minority for liking this show though.

JJ Trek movies are basically Star Wars movies. Fun, but not really Trek.

Watch the television shows if you want the true Star Trek experience.
>>
>>71396989
All the movies stand on their own, although Wrath of Khan and First Contact reference the show, they tell you everything you need to know.

>I'm interested in watching some comfy 70s scifi.
Only the first one is actually 70s, and only the first two feel 70s. That said, watch all of them in order, and this is how I'd rank them from best to worst:

1. The Undiscovered Country
2. The Motion Picture
3. First Contact
4. Wrath of Khan
5. The Voyage Home
6. The Final Frontier
7. The Search For Spock
8. Generations
9. Nemesis
10. Insurrection

Fun fact: there were no other Star Trek movies, but a lot of people have a strange brain disease which makes them think there were.

>>
>>71397372
You could watch ST2 I guess, but it really works better if you've seen the original show.

To be honest, most of the movies either suck or are merely ok, and the best moments in the movies work best if you've already invested in the show.

star trek just works better in episodic format. You're better off watching the highlight episodes from TNG if you just want a bit of Trek.
>>
Whould I see the Kirk Trek before starting TNG? Only Star Trek show I ever saw was the one with Captain Archer or something. I wanna get into this series properly.

>>
>>71378821
That is not an accurate analogy. Picard's brother was upset at his pride, while Picard was upset at his own conscience. At the end of the episode, they both come to terms with the other's conflict.

Your Moby Dick analogy is also lacking. The whale didn't only hurt Ahab's pride, it crippled him. The in-film comparison is only in the sense of revenge leading to self destruction, but does not dismiss the role the Borg played in personally damaging Picard.

Who's idea was it to cast the most English man to have ever walked the Earth as their French captain? There's nothing French about him beyond his name in the final product.
>>
>>71399684
Robert Justman and Rick Berman. They wrote the character as French but Patrick Stewart didn't bother with an accent

http://memory-alpha.wikia.com/wiki/Robert_Justman#Return_to_Star_Trek

>It was Justman who discovered and pushed for the casting of Patrick Stewart for the role of Captain Jean-Luc Picard. Rick Berman recalled, "Roddenberry was very against the idea of a bald British actor playing the next Capt. Kirk, but Bob was very persistent, and Patrick became Capt. Picard."

Is there a reason why Star Trek has absolutely no form of popular music? Why does everyone only listen to classical and jazz and only read literature from the 1800s?

To show how refined they are. Also because that can date a show very quickly.

In universe, I doubt it, they definitely have modern authors like we see in DS9: The Visitor and Harry Kim and Picard both wrote their own music, it just doesn't appear to be popular with Starfleet officers, or not as popular as real classical music or literature.

Out of universe:

>It's cheaper
>It's faster
>It doesn't date the show

Klingons are the only one with good original music, everyone else sounds like early 90s new age garbage, which is what they thought was futuristic at the time. I can't find any clips, but see VOY: Remember for an example.

If you watched Voyager (trust me, there was actually more good there than these fuckers will have you believe), but anyways, if you did watch Voyager, the episode "Dark Frontier" involves Seven having flashbacks to before she was assimilated; when she was just a little girl.

Her father and mother are talking about the Borg Queen and her father, Magnus Hansen, is examining a Borg drone from Unimatrix Zero that they transported onto the Raven.

Here is the dialogue:
ANNIKA: Is he special?
MAGNUS: Very special. We think he used to work near the Borg Queen. If he ever goes back there, we'll be able to track him now.
ANNIKA: Does the Queen have a throne?
MAGNUS: Nobody knows.
ERIN: We think she's more like the Queen of an insect colony. She helps coordinate all the other drones.

So, I suppose you could say they were trying to tie than she has a role but ultimately was just as much a slave as the rest of the drones to the functioning of the collective.

The only other mention of her origin that I can remember is in that same episode as she's talking to Seven she says "We all originated from lesser species. I myself came from species one two five. But that's irrelevant now."

Sorry, bud, they're so unequivocally canon that you'd have to do away with everything after TOS to make them not canon through what Sisko called "linear time".

One event begets another and another..

See how stupid your logic is? Or I should say a lack thereof.

This movie makes no sense. It's basically a remake of the episode Journey's End, but the crew decides to say fuck the prime directive instead of following it to a fault like they did in the episode.
