It genuinely looks like a bad film. Ghostbusters was so close to having a third film done with the original cast, but it just never eventuated. Eventually everyone's Ghostbusters 3 blueballs dissipated. Then out of nowhere a remake (as opposed to sequel or reboot, the distinction is important) is created that has a completely different tone and direction is created.
I can understand how a lot of the hardcore fans of the original feel aggrieved, and the female cast has nothing to do with it. To the rest of us it just looks like yet another shit and soulless remake/reboot.

The thing about this movie series is that it has a huge fanbase and a lot of people have at least heard about it, and when they stepped in everyone else hopped on the bandwagon too so it became very easy to hate this particular movie so much that it became trendy.
With that said, I think it deserves most of it for reasons already stated. The dialogue and jokes are horrible, it's obvious it's mainly a cash grab and the acting seems very sub par.
Personally I really hate how they couldn't just make it a sequel, and think that that is it's biggest flaw.

Ghostbusters is a fairly serious film set in a normal universe. It just happens to star characters like Bill Murray (playing Bill Murray) who are kinda funny people. Remove his quips, and Rick Moranis' character and it's a pretty serious film about the end of the world.
This one feels like an extended SNL sketch with WACKY characters doing WACKY things.

The villain is a down grade too. This one has some snarky guy, who apparently is just some guy given some powers. Huge downgrade from an ancient cult conspiracy to open a portal to bring about the end of the world. Gozer and his (its?) minions were freaky and scared the hell out of em as a child.
It's lacking that edge and real sense of danger. It's kind of lost when you shoot the villain in the nuts with your gun for laughs.

The song has elements of greatness. The I'm Not Afraid part is great. It really feels like it's building to something.
It should ditch the original song's lyrics. The original is happy feel good 80's silly pop. ANd that works in context. It can't work in a more serious song. New lyrics would make it stand on its own more.

I agree, for a movie to walk that balance it has to believe fully and wholly in it's characters and it's concept. The new Ghostbusters seems nervous and apprehensive about itself; you can see it in the marketing, the way it dances around whether it's a reboot or continuation, the forced cameos, etc.
I unironically love Guardians of the Galaxy.
