The problem is, you understood the film as presenting itself as being great when it was the character, Lawrence, presenting himself as great. The technical aspects of the film reflect Lawrence's self-presentation and thus, it may seem like the movie is "insisting" upon itself when it isn't. It's just telling Lawrence's story from his viewpoint.
