Not really, no. The original did $50 million in its opening weekend twenty years ago, which would be almost $100m adjusting for increase in ticket prices. To not even match ID4's actual numbers is downright pathetic, especially since it lost the weekend to a second-week movie that suffered a 45% drop itself. That's really bad. Emmerich should definitely consider a new line of work.
