It's pretty much this or Ripley. Actually it's this, Ripley has too few flaws. Strong characters have to be well written, anybody can make some Mary Sue that's tough. Sara Conor has flaws, and still behaves like a woman too, not just a tough guy role with a girl in it.

Writing a strong woman role is pretty simple, more than what movies make it seem. Put them in a situation where they're forced to survive and constantly keep them in that situation until they have enough credibility to be respected as a character.

The problem with characters like Rey and Black Widow is writers believe giving them a backstory on said matters is enough.

Oh, come on! She comes across as a reasonably realistic person - a movie character doesn't have to be on the verge of a mental break down all the time to be "good". There's more than just a hand full of real-life examples of people who'd be "too flawless" by those standards (at least if you only see them in the context of a particular narrative). Ripley is a good *female* protagonist because her gender is basically just one part of her personality and not the focus of the story or her actions.
>>
>>71290366
None. No small as fuck female can beat a big guy.

It's unrealistic.

Honestly, the only reasonable one is Selene from Underworld.
Ripley is too much technology and movie-logic luck.
Sara Conor is too edgy to come off as likeable and realistic.
Other females are either just stereotypical archetypes or just not memorable.

Granted, Selene is also a bit edgy and some of the Underworld stuff is cheesy (most, actually). But she's a fairly reasonable character in-lore.
She's a vampire, so she has supernatural abilities and characteristics, enough to be considered a stronk wymyn, but not too much to be Mary Sue.
She's using guns 90% of the time to her advantage instead of trying to fight the big boys in hand to hand combat, yet she's not too much into the tech side of things. Just enough to rely on herself.
She's a female in a world of male supernatural fucks, so none of them will think that she's going to go against the hivemind and do something that will potentially haunt her life forever (aka, biting Michael in a desperate attempt to give him the hybrid transformation, but at the same time risking his death, and risking her own execution, or at least being hunted not only by werewolves and humans, but also her own kin).

That's a well written fucking character.
Too bad the series itself doesn't have much consistency.

The problem is Wiseman while having a distinct visual style is terrible at lore and black guy werewolf is also the other writer and he is too caught up in trying to make mythology into almost like vampire version of cyberpunk and it just does not tonally work.

Their 'fluff' is weak, michael looked better in the second movie but hybrids as a whole are just a bad idea. Storywise wiseman would have been better to rip off various shakespeare family feuding method and just reduce romance angle. Sort of like Warm Bodies. Though unlike that don't make it a romance obviously.

Surprisingly when they just focused on her character as a vampire queen type of figure and fighting between weres and selene, it was a much better story, which would have made a better second act than evolution.

What do you mean by this? I really liked Underworld Evolution's expansion of the lore of the Underworld universe. The opening scene of the Vampire Elders looking at William's destruction of a village and killing his progeny was a pretty cool scene.

>Their 'fluff' is weak, michael looked better in the second movie but hybrids as a whole are just a bad idea.

See, hwne I watched Underwrold for the first time, I was probably 14 or so and so to me the idea of vampires and werewolves having both a common biological origin and being able to produce a hybrid beast was almost revolutionary to me. Now, the later idea of creating all these different strains of hybrids like the 75% Vampire 25% Werewolf thing Selene's daughter is, is pretty dumb.

I also liked the twist that she was actually working for the side that killed her family.
>>
>>71302263

I guess I am overly critical but in pantheon of vampire 'lore' or fluff it just comes off generic and tends to skew towards worst elements of that story telling. Penny dreadful ran into these same problems recently in very similar and unfulfilling ways.

Back in 03' I was just getting into VTM and a lot of other lore heavy type worlds so when you know great story telling is out there it makes something that has sort of a unique spin and ideas, you want it to be fulfilling and story outside of the main plot, the world building is just weak and elements of it inform the story.

If you wanted commonality they would have been better off with a common disease both killing vampires and werewolves and they need original strain to fix whatever the macguffin is and avoid hybrid plot.

Most of the story motivation from all sides would remain the same. Instead I would make it about Michael wanting to be a vampire to be with selene or some unfounded fear about his dead girlfriend/wife just like the original backstory but ends up becoming a werewolf instead but make him like the new william except of the lycans instead of original werewolf so he gets some advantages, is still 'unique' but on the other side of the story, keep narrative neat and story structure would be something people are already familiar with.

I see what you're saying but I thought that the idea that vampires and werewolves had a purely biological origin from a single source was pretty well thought out. I liked the idea that some mysterious virus from God knows where ravaged some no name Hungarian village and while it killed almost everyone, a warlord with some 1 in a billion genetic quirk was able to benefit from the changes the virus made as it altered his somatic and germ lines.

Then two of his sons also have the same active genetic quirk he does and get bitten by a wolf and vampire and both change even more into new human subspecies.
