he made a tremendous mistake when he sided with Hitler. should have just weaseled his way out of the war like Franco did.
Plus he asked Hitler to delay his attack on Poland so he could build up his military, and hitler went ahead with the invasion anyway, so Italy was playing arms race catch up the entire war

Had he purged out the royals in the ground forces which consisted of old ass clowns such as Luigi Cadorno from ww1 and replaced them with younger cadre's it wouldn't have been such a mess.
