Almost every CoD campaign is THE definition of short but sweet.
They have simple tight stories that adequately set up some incredible set pieces and awesome moments.

The entire plot hinges on that one terrorist act, they give you an option to skip it but the story doesn't make sense if you do.
Russia invades and fucks up America pretty badly, I'd argue it's more offensive to skip the mission because without witnessing it, it makes Russia seem like a bunch of assholes who just come into America and kill everyone for no reason other than some vague mention of a some airport massacre.
That massacre is meant to frame America and playing it gives you a good reason for why Russia invaded America.
