I went in wanting to like it after liking Only God Forgives and feeling it got unjustified hate by people who just thought it was random and lacked a story. So keep in mind that was my mindset when I say this movie was a total piece of shit and devolved into random pretentious bullshit.
Maybe it really is just too smart for me but I feel like i'm generally attentive and looking for deeper meaning in movies and I got absolutely nothing out of the Neon Demon. When Jesse died I thought the movie was at the half way point, maybe the plot would thicken, its pretty fucking weird I wouldn't have been surprised if she wasn't really dead, but no the movie simply lacks a plot, good characters, themes, or anything else to make it good. Her death and everything after it feel totally retarded and empty. It officially becomes random nonsense after Jesse's stage closing, before that I didn't even think it was good but I thought there was potential for it to turn into something more interesting.

I'm still struggling with Ruby/Inner beauty but I'm assuming it has to do with a rebirth or something. The rebirth/recycling of femininity/purity. This movie however, seems to be going straight edge for a while, and then just focuses more on the critique of beauty/obsession with it. I honestly really LOVED this. I had high hopes and while it wasn't really what I was expecting (more horror desu) it was still really great. Haven't read the thread yet but I'll post my opinions and interpretations first then read through other anon's opinions.
Movie was really good. I thought the satirical aspects were a little heavy handed but it was okay because I'm a pleb and wouldn't have gotten it otherwise. Keanu was a neat little comedic character, I always enjoy seeing that guy on the screen. The rectangle imagery I didn't really get, but the triangle imagery I interpreted as representing Elle's state of mind (blue triangle for purity goes to red as she starts getting deeper into shit). I thought the parallel between sexuality and violence was very well done in this one, Refn's getting really good at that (compare Drive's strip club hammer scene with the necrophilia scene and the murder/shower scene and you'll see a clear difference). I thought the ending dragged on way too long and wasn't very satisfying; like after having great sex but you try to get going again but just can't do much with it. And the period/full moon imagery was a little odd, it seemed to represent the start of a new cycle and that was reinforced by introducing the other young girl for the shoot, but the whole cycle aspect was dropped immediately afterwards.

there really isnt much to see, its just some lip gloss with the logo of the movie on it, complete with the NWR. the temp tats, however, are awesome. its got the colored rhinestones she wears around her eyes on the poster, as well as those gold bars she wears in her first photo shoot. im really tempted to cosplay as Jesse the next time i go to a party, but i also want to keep the tats forever.
