only major difference I can tell is the way they went, while the original army was moving towards cirith ungol, Jacksons version went to the Black Gate.
The Distance between the Morannon Gate and Mount Doom is freakishly far though, so the distance movie sam and frodo went is about as far as from Gondor to the Black Gate all over again.
