Also a girl here, and I understood the movie all too well. Guy has creepy obsession with woman, the woman is rightly put off by this. He then meets some prostitute but is too much of a "nice guy" to utilize her services. He then decides to save her by singlehandedly shooting up the pimps and his lackeys. The film is about loneliness and misfits, people living on the fringes of society, you see it in the other taxi drivers in the film and the way they communicate with each other, there's solidarity between them, despite being very different people, they intuitively empathise with each other and understand the struggles of the job and what in their lives brought them to be shuffling people from A to B at 4am.
It's about how dehumanising the modern world can be. It's about how soul-crushing trying to court a partner can be for the socially awkward. It's about someone trying to understand what makes you a good person and how they mix that up with all kinds of other things.
It's supposed to be a cathartic experience for the viewer as you identify with Travis and the other characters. You're not meant to see him as a creep, his character is supposed to reflect some of our deeper neuroses.

Travis has been in Vietnam and suffers from insomnia. He might have not been even crazy, but quite fucked due sleep deprivation. He actually did pretty well with that chick until he took her to that Swede cuck movie. I am pretty sure it is implied that he is pretty dumb. Taxi Driver is primarily about a disillusioned Vietnam War veteran who has to work nights since he can't sleep through them due to PTSD-related insomnia. At his heart a normal, good guy, he realizes how filthy and disgusting late night downtown NY city is and becomes even further disillusioned with things, but at the same time it seems to profoundly affect him. Think about the scene with the rumpled-up money on his seat.
In Iris he sees purity among the filth, an innocent girl who, just like the society around him, is inherently good but becoming corrupted by evil forces.
He also saw this in Betsy, but he really didn't really know what to do with her. Society had failed him so much that the only thing he could think of was to bring her to a porno on their first date.
Things get complicated with the wanting to assassinate the politician bit. I hear this is a reference to an actual assassination attempt but it's always been difficult for me to understand. Probably somehow Travis blames politicians for failing to clean up the city in the first place and lacks the faith in the new candidate to do any better.
Once he reaches that final straw, he unleashes his violence upon the very symbol of degeneracy to him, the drug dealers that had enslaved Iris. The fact that he survived and was praised for it symbolizes that his struggle to find goodness and do the right thing finally materialized.
I suppose therefore it's about one good man's struggle to find meaning and goodness in a cesspool.
