Why don't we see practical effects of this quality any more?

Why don't we see practical effects of this quality any more? You'd think with modern technology, we'd be able to see a lot of quality messed-up shit. And yet, it's all CGI - and not even good-looking CGI.

As opposed to realer then real life CG? Give me a break. Practical effects in this day and age would look amazing, I bet.

>>71231203
Yeah, but what about muh artistic vision and creative integrity? Is every director a sell-out? I can't believe it.
>>
>>71231285
>is every director a sell-out?

No, but most producers are.
>>
>>71231170
because producers want shit on time. with practical effects you have to wait for the stuff to be made, tested, fine tuned. then placed on set, then camera tested and if something goes wrong it holds up production until its fixed, which can cost studios lots of money. then it may not even look as good as they hoped and then everything has to be scrapped and either done over again or whatever, which can again cost dones of money and push dates back and fuck schedules up.

CGI is you film in then worry about shit later. To the producers and fat cats who are signing checks and who only care about dates and deadlines and budget, they dont give a shit how it looks, because thats not their job.

movies are shit today because people dont have to be as careful. Same goes for Digital vs Film. Film you had to worry about running out of reel, with digital it doesnt matter.

This shit is all common sense.

people would rather have a jerky CGI puppet than an animatronic puppet with jerky movement.

I was hoping there was a more interesting reason for that besides "le greed".

I just think that all that hard work pays in the end. Movies like The Thing are still considered classics, and the practical effects, while wonky by today's standards, still look good - especially if you know what went into making them.

Because we don't see any practical effects anymore. Even when they tried to do some puppetry in the new Star Wars movie they were total shit tier compared to puppets in the earlier films. It's a lost art form. I don't know why they don't just get the guys making real robots like in pic related here to do movie special effects.

>the you only notice CGI that sucks meme

No duh dipshit. Nobody cares about CGI being used to make matte painting backgrounds. Most of the shit in that video you posted isn't even CGI it's just composite shots. They took a shot of a real lion and mixed it with shots of people to make it look like they were all together. They didn't just take a shot of people and add in a CGI plastic lion that doesn't look real.

That's more because of lawsuits/workers' unions things. HK movie industry, for good and for bad, can pull off this shit because they don't give as much shit.

That looks real only in the sense that it looks real because it is real, as in it's a real life prop. It doesn't look real in the sense of oh shit look at that REAL fly man hybrid!

It's the same problem with The Thing. You fucks love to meme about how real it looks but ignore that it animates like dog shit and is obviously puppetwork slathered in goo. Yeah it looks real because the prop is actually on set but that's it. That doesn't automatically make it good or better than cgi.

Case in point, I challenge you to find an animatronic creature that looks better than pic related, in terms of aesthetics and ANIMATION.

Early CG was pretty bad but its mostly passable now, depends largely on the artists. The bear in the the Revenant looked fucking real for example, that was the result of talented animators and 3D sculptures. The bigger problem for me is poorly implemented green screens, where its painfully obvious the entire setting is fake like in the Hobbit.

Exactly this.

People point out movies like this as an example of good cgi. But it's not CGI, it's computer aided composition, it's real shots and some lite cgi used to mix real images.

I'm tired of that argument. Good CGI exists, sometimes it's incredible, but editing a bunch of real shots into one is not pure CGI.

What people have a problem with is the overreliance of CGI with things that could better be represented with practical effects, miniatures, or stunt work.
>>
>>71231170
CGI is probably easier. All the work is done on a computer screen. No physical work required. Just mental.

>>
>>71237428

The thing that gets me is that there just had to be people controlling that live in real time, they didn't have computers to control it all.

Real puppeteers, controlling that in real time, syncing along to a vocal track, while interacting with a real person.

That's a crazy amount of skill.
>>
>>71237428
>>71237552

>It took elaborate puppetry in order to make Audrey II come to life. Besides the electric sparks in the final scene, not a lot of CG was shown in the film. To the viewer, it appears that Audrey moves in real time along with Seymour, or whoever else it's singing with/talking to. But since it can only move at a certain speed, it would be filmed singing/talking at 16 frames per second. Rick Moranis and all of the other actors would have to sing in slow motion, which (in editing) would be sped up to appear that they're singing in unision at a normal speed.
